Destination Weddings Cost Guests 1,139

A new survey carried out by Sainsburys Travel Insurance has revealed that eight million

British wedding guests have attended destination weddings of friends and family members over the last five years.

Weddings abroad have cost individuals an average of 1,139 which has been spent on travel to and from exotic locations, accommodation, wedding gifts and special outfits for the occasion. This amounts to a total spending of 8.9 billion for guests attending destination weddings over the last five years.

With many more couples planning on getting married abroad in the near future, this number looks set to increase. According to the survey 500,000 British people said that they are making plans for their own weddings abroad in the near future and over 1.5 million people have said that they will be attending overseas weddings as guests.

Over one million Brits (14 per cent) said that they have spent over 2,500 on attending a wedding abroad, and just over 500,000 (7 per cent) spent over 4,000. The survey also includes the money spent on travel and accommodation by the couples themselves but not the amount spent on the big day itself and the honeymoon.

The survey revealed that Londoners are the most likely to travel abroad for a wedding with 25 per cent saying they have attended an overseas wedding as a guest during the past five years. Just 7 per cent of the people asked who live in the East Midlands and 9 per cent of Scottish participants have been to a destination wedding during this period.

The most popular destinations for romantic nuptials include Caribbean weddings with beautiful tropical landscapes and reliable warm weather, and romantic beach weddings in the Indian Ocean; on island destinations such as the Maldives, Mauritius and the Seychelles.

Despite the high number of British people attending destination weddings, only 29 per cent, including brides and grooms, take out travel insurance for the trip. Many reasons for this are that people dont want the added expense; its only a short trip so they wont need it; and one in ten people revealed that as it isnt a real holiday, they just hadnt thought about it.

Scott Gorman from Sainsbury's Travel Insurance said: "Weddings abroad are popular and the cost of these overseas celebrations are clearly far more expensive than just a typical holiday, so it's even more important for couples - and guests - to ensure they are fully protected well before they travel. Should the unimaginable happen, having no travel insurance could make the big day memorable for all the wrong reasons."
