Detect Toenail Fungus

Toenail Fungus is one of the many common fungal that can affect any individual throughout their lifetime

. Those who are suffering from diabetes and elderly people are more prone to toenail fungus. You can be infected by this fungus at any time. Hence, it is advised that one take the proper precautions in order to prevent this type of condition.

Toenail infections can cause pain and discomfort. The fungus grows on the nail bed and feed on keratin (protein) that makes up the upper surface of the nails. Poor hygiene of the nails, abnormal pH of the skin, continuous use of tight-fitting shoes, and contact with a person infected with dermatophytes are some of the major causes of Toenail infections.

The symptoms of toenail fungus can disturb a persons day-to-day activities. Listed here are some of the most common symptoms of toenail fungus. If not treated properly at the initial stage, the health conditions become much worse. This fungal infection usually starts from the toenails and later grows inward, if not treated. Compared to other nails, the big and little toes are more susceptible to toenail fungal infection.

Color change of the nails is the first symptom of toenail infection. In the beginning stage, there may be presence of small white or yellow patches underneath the nails. As the infection progresses, the overall color of the infected toes change to dull yellow, brown or sometimes, black.


Of the various types of toenail fungus, White superficial onychomycosis is less common. In this case, the nail turns white in color instead of yellow or brown. Moreover, the surface of the nails becomes dry, soft and powdery and the toes become thicker, chalky and brittle. The nails get so thicker that it is difficult to cut. In severe case, it can lead to complete loss of the nail.

You can see keratinous debris accumulated beneath the infected nail and causes the nail to swell. It can be cleaned only if proper treatment is done. Also, there is foul smell from underneath the infected nails. Toenail fungus is less common in children and can be diagnosed by a qualified physician.
