, with each claiming to be the one to do the best job of cleaning and preserving your valuable clothing, it is head spinning to say the least, to pick the one just right for your soft cashmere or pashmina sweaters, scarves or other articles of clothing requiring careful and gentle handling during washing. Being fortunate enough to own several cashmere sweaters and one or two pashmina scarves, I can share my personal search for the just right detergent.

The first recommendation received from a well meaning friend was Ivory dish detergent, which produced a huge amount of suds which required several rinsing in cool water before they came out completely. It did seem to be gently enough for my pashmina scarves, although it did leave a light residue.

Allen's Naturally is a wonderful laundry detergent that is biodegradeable coontaing no perfume to irritate skin and it leaves absolutely no residue. It is a little higher in price than some, but it is a detergent I would highly recommend.

A friend of mine washed her new cashmere sweater in the washing machine on the delicate cycle with Tide. After the wash was done and she took her sweater out of the machine, she was horrified to find that the color had bled, and her beautiful cashmere sweater was all stretched out of shape. I recommended hand washing it in cool water with Deft laundry detergent, that I used for baby clothes, and then laying it out on a table on a towel and blocking it to shape it again. She did as I suggested and her sweater was as good as new, with a slight change in color.

Another fine detergent that is excellent for pashmina and cashmere is called Country Save Powder laundry detergent. It is also environmentally safe, with no perfume or residue. It can be found on-line, and is reasonable priced.

Ultra Cheer Free and Gentle is a detergent found in most supermarkets and stores across the U.S. and it is very gentle on delicate items such as pashmina and cashmere. I have personally used it quite often, always handwashing my delicate pashmina scarves and cashmere sweaters.

Naturally Baby is another fine product for cleaning cashmere and pashmina. It is free of perfume and dyes and is perfect for those of us with sensitive skin. Naturally Baby can be obtained on-line at a competetive price.
