Determining The Right Size And Shape Of A Pond Kit
Deciding on the footprint of a do-it-yourself water garden or koi pond kit in the backyard can be puzzling
. There are many factors to consider, such as how much room there is, what the person plans to put in it, how they plan to filter it and what they want it to look like. There are several existing factors that will help determine the size and shape. The rest will be a matter of personal preference.
Location
Choosing where to place the pond will greatly affect the size and filtration. Consider the presence of any underground pipes, utility lines, thick tree roots and well water. If there is little room on the property for water features, a smaller pond or a pondless waterfall might be more realistic.
Size
The amount of water needed and used is a large factor. The length, width and depth of the pond determine how much water is needed. How many gallons of water used helps to determine how many fish can live in it comfortably. Without fish, the requirements are more focused on room available and how much money is spent on water usage and maintenance.
Purpose
Some water gardens are created to give ambience and atmosphere to a back yard. It might be the interest in nice scenery or the gurgling sound of running water that comes with waterfalls or streams that prompts their creation. Water gardens and ponds are well-known for their relaxing effect on people who observe them. Koi are popular additions to water gardens. Likened to jumbo goldfish in a variety of colors, these playful creatures often bring fascination and enjoyment to their owners.
Filtration
A filtration system makes the environment livable for fish. It affects the amount of oxygen in the water and how well the water is kept clean to create a healthy home for fish and plants. Since koi and pond fish create about one-third of their body weight in waste each day, the filtration system must be efficient enough to safely filter the water. The smaller the pond size means fewer fish and plants used, which requires a smaller filtration system needed.
Pond Kits
Custom pond kits can be purchased online. They can be pre-designed to fit the area available, or the owner can design their own size and shape to suite their taste and landscaping. They can be installed by the owner or a professional can do the installation. Once it is set up, it needs regular care and maintenance.
