Determining The Value Of Antique Mirrors

Some may underestimate the value of antique mirrors

. Many people focus on other antiques and forget about these gems. Mirrors are functional and beautiful, and often fetch a startling price if the piece is of high enough quality. Not only that, but they look great and are nice display items.

It's important to know how much the mirror you own is worth. It's even more important to know the worth of whichever piece you are considering adding to your collection. The older the piece, the more value it has. Run your fingers along the back and it's edges. If you feel very sharp edges then chances are it's not very old.

Another way to try and determine how old a particular piece is is by looking at what was used to make it. For example, antique hardware was handmade and is easy to spot. A modern piece uses modern hardware which has no irregularities. Handmade pieces look one of a kind and have irregular widths and lengths.

If there are no screws but rather veneers in it's frame, there are a few things to look for. Antique furniture veneers were very thick and irregular widths. Think of it like home sliced bread, irregular borders. Modern veneers are thinner and each are exactly the same width.

When considering the value of the mirror glass, it's a little easier to tell if it's old or not. Old mirror glass is often wavy in appearance, and also carries a grey tint. The reflection will look almost ashen. To quickly see if it's old or not, try holding the tip of an object to the mirror. When the tip of the reflection is close to the actual tip, it's an indication of old glass.

Value is typically measured by several factors. Rarity is fairly hard to determine and will require some research. The more rare your piece is the more it's value increases. Condition and quality are also very important in determining value. Having an old piece doesn't make it worth a lot of money unless it's a well conditioned old piece. Also, an antique is most valuable when it is made well and out of high quality materials. The more ornate a piece is, the better. Craftsmanship plays an important role in figuring value.

Antique mirrors have the potential to be worth a lot. As long as the glass is original and the frame is neatly carved, you likely have not just a great looking show piece but a quality investment on your hands. Research your item and shop around for the best price you may get for it if the time comes when you want to sell it.
