Detroit is a dynamic, vibrant city, with substantial new development throughout the region

. From distinctive cultural institutions, new casino hotels and a transformed riverfront, to championship sports, exciting nightlife, fun festivals and events and delicious dining options, now is an exciting time to visit The D.

Detroit's International Riverfront has been completely transformed with more than three miles of RiverWalk complete, perfect for walking, biking, running and enjoying the views of downtown Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. Popular features along the riverfront include fountains, a carousel, concessions, plazas, pavilions, a bicycle shop offering bicycle rentals and fishing platforms. Also located along the Riverfront is the GM Renaissance Center. Visitors can explore this massive building which has shops, restaurants, a cinema, free tours and the GMnext showroom.

One of the newest developments along the riverfront is William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor (formerly Tri-Centennial Park), the first urban state park in Michigan. The 31-acre park offers several covered picnic areas, shoreline fishing and a newly renovated 52-slip harbor. The park also has a wetlands demonstration project, which shows how wetlands act as nature's water filtration system. Interpretative signs explain how the wetland naturally cleans the water and then returns it to the Detroit River as clean water - without going to a wastewater treatment plant.

The Detroit International Riverfront and its surrounding areas are the location for many of downtown Detroit's popular events and festivals. Detroit River Days, which focuses on showcasing Detroit's dynamic RiverFront, takes place June 18-21. Festival-goers can participate in maritime activities on the Detroit River from tall ships tours to Coast Guard vessels, jet-ski demonstrations to Diamond Jack river tours, Parade of

Lights and local and national musical acts. The festival concludes on June 21 with one of the most spectacular and largest fireworks displays in the world, the annual Target Fireworks. Hydroplane race fans will flock to the Detroit Riverfront July 9-11 for the American Power Boat Association (APBA) Gold Cup. Jazz enthusiasts from all over the country will fill several city blocks from Detroit's Hart Plaza to Campus Martius Park for the 31st Annual Detroit International Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend.

Campus Martius Park, located in the center of downtown -- just a short walk from the riverfront -- has become the city's gathering place. The park hosts concerts in the summertime, an ice rink in the winter and other special events throughout the year.

The easiest and most convenient way to get around downtown is taking a ride on the Detroit People Mover. The People Mover is an above ground light rail that connects to downtown Detroit's restaurants, hotels, retailers, entertainment and sporting venues. It only costs 50 cents to ride and gives a great view of the Detroit skyline.

The D offers a wide selection of dining for all tastes. From tortillas and tacos in Mexicantown, micro-brewed beers and burgers, flaming cheese (saganaki) and authentic Greek fare in Greektown, to chili and onion-smothered Coney dogs, and celebrity chef and AAA Four Diamond ranking restaurants, the dining options in The D are endless.

Place your bets at Detroit's three casinos, MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Greektown Casino, each with 400-room hotels and exciting atmospheres. Try your luck at the slots or table games, relax and rejuvenate at the spa, fuel up at their delicious restaurants and enjoy evening entertainment.

Take a short ride along Woodward Avenue and explore Detroit's cultural center, which includes a variety of museums for all ages and interests: Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Science Center and the Detroit Historical Museum. Make your way to West Grand Boulevard, where the Motown Sound was born in Studio A, and tour the Motown Historical Museum. In nearby Dearborn you can go back in history at The Henry Ford museum and Greenfield Village, and watch as a Ford F-150 is built at the Ford Rouge Factory Tour.

Shoppers can shop till they drop at metro Detroit's shopping malls and major shopping districts. The Somerset Collection offers the finest brands at its upscale stores and boutiques. The Mall at Partridge Creek is an open-air shopping center with unique amenities such as a 30 foot fireplace, bocce ball courts and a dog-friendly atmosphere. Great Lakes Crossing outlet mall provides value shopping with a dose of sophistication. The major shopping districts in Birmingham, Ferndale, Grosse Pointe, Northville, Plymouth, Rochester and Royal Oak also offer a great selection of shopping options.

Detroit is a four season destination with professional sports action all year round. The Detroit Tigers play baseball at Comerica Park, which features a tiger themed carousel, baseball themed Ferris wheel and fireworks following weekend night games. The Detroit Lions play football at Ford Field, home to Super Bowl XL, 2009 NCAA Men's Final Four and 2010 NCAA Men's Frozen Four. Skate over to Joe Louis Arena where the Detroit Red Wings play hockey and have brought the Stanley Cup home to Detroit 11 times. For basketball action, take a drive to the Palace of Auburn Hills where the Detroit Pistons play.

With Canada just across the river, Detroit provides a convenient opportunity to visit another country and take advantage of its attractive and entertaining downtown. A bustling multicultural town with great shopping, restaurants and outdoor cafes, Windsor holds special significance for African Americans because it served as the final stop on the Underground Railroad for escaped slaves. It's easy to get to Windsor from Detroit, just be sure to have a passport. Travelers can gain access via the Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.
