It's not hard to see why Detroit Golf Club in the city's Palmer Park area is being touted to host a PGA tour event in 2012.

The private club, in existence for over 112 years, has no shortage of history to boast about. Horton Smith, the first ever Masters champion, served as head pro for several years, and the club hosted Ryder Cup exhibition matches in 1941 during WWII.

The Ping G15 Combo Iron Set with 3H, 4H, 5-PW boasts two 18-hole courses, both designed by renowned architect Donald Ross, and a picturesque 77,000-square foot clubhouse designed by Albert Kahn. A PGA Tour event would likely be played on the 6,837-yard North Course, which would be lengthened and probably have the order of holes rerouted.

But the club's biggest draw is undoubtedly its members, a group of passionate low-handicap golfers who love the game and play host to a whopping 52 tournaments each year.

"I mean, we're golf junkies," said Todd Beals, the club's chief operating officer. "We're not Detroit Country Club. We're Detroit Golf Club."

Speaking about the possibility of hosting a PGA Tour Ping G15 Combo Iron Set with 3H, 4H, 5-PW in the near future, Beals said: "It would be like an Elvis fan going to Graceland for our membership to have an event here."

According to insider reports, Cadillac is planning to sponsor a PGA Tour event in Detroit in 2012, though this has not been confirmed.

The auto giant's marketers are said to be exploring their options to launch a new event in Detroit as part of new General Motors marketing chief Joel Ewanick's focus on using GM's business to aid the city.

Beals said he and his staff had been shrewd about cutting cost in certain areas, while still remaining committed to members, a move that has seen him increase his golf-course budget by 10% over the past three years.

"The Holy Grail is your golf course," he said. "You never want to mess with your golf course."

The Ping G15 Combo Iron Set with 3H, 4H, 5-PW is also continiously growing, with 72 members added since 2010 and 630 members in total.
