, rookie Jonas Jerebko added 11 rebounds and 10 points and the Detroit Pistons defeated the Atlanta Hawks 94-88. Get Detroit Pistons tickets and see Wallace grab a rebound. Detroit coach John Kuester has done a lot of lineup juggling this season. Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon missed the game due to ankle injuries, while Tayshaun Prince was sidelined because of a back injury. Kuester moved Jason Maxiell off the bench and he replaced rookie Austin Daye with veteran point-guard Chucky Atkins.
The moves paid off. The Pistons had 24 offensive rebounds and had a 30-10 advantage on second chance points. Detroit snapped a seven-game losing skid with a victory over Atlanta. After the game, Kuester said "Boy, Jonas has been a pleasant surprise for us this year, and Max did a great job for us today."
Kuester talked about the leadership that Wallace and Prince brought to the game. The coach said he wanted to add Atkins to that discussion. "He's been huge for our young guards. He's going to be a coach in this league, and he's doing a lot of that for us." Atkins' presence took pressure off Rodney Stuckey, who recorded 23 points and had eight assists. Will Bynum came off the bench and registered 19 points for the Pistons. The point guard acknowledged that Detroit could compete with any team in the league, but stated it was up to his teammates "to come out and do the things that give us a chance to be in the game at the end." Bynum also admitted that his team struggled to close games out lately, but noted that the Pistons did a good job finishing off the Hawks.
Josh Smith led the Hawks with 21 points, but Atlanta couldn't overcome Detroit's 53-27 rebounding advantage. Atlanta coach Mike Woodson told the press if "you get beat like that on the boards, you aren't going to beat many teams in this league." The coach added that his team did not display their full effort and was "outworked" by the Pistons. Wallace, Jerebko, and Maxiell showed their full effort by attacking the offensive glass. Detroit had 17 second-chance points on their way to a 55-47 halftime lead.
The Pistons expanded the margin to as many as 11 in the third quarter. But the Hawks answered back and were within two, 67-65, at the end of the third. Atlanta opened the fourth quarter with a basket, but then allowed the Pistons to take control of the game. Detroit went on a 10-0 run to go up 77-67 with 7:45 remaining. Atlanta narrowed the gap to 89-85 with 30 seconds left in the game. After that, Maxiell knocked down one of two free throws and Mike Bibby hit a long 3-pointer. Smith gave a lot of credit to Wallace and stated, just like coach Woodson, "It was a lack of effort on our part." The forward was disappointed with the loss, especially since Detroit had many key players out of the lineup due to injuries.
