Holmstrom's power-play goal at 2:35 in the second got the Red Wings on the scoreboard and ended a scoring drought which lasted over 175 minutes. Detroit overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the third. After the game, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said, "Overall, we found a way to do it. Obviously, things haven't gone well for us here of late. But we've played real well."

Chris Mason stopped 33 shots, while David Backes had a goal and an assist for St. Louis. Roman Polak and Brad Boyes also scored for the Blues. Backes gave the Blues a 1-0 lead 13:24 into the first period. Polak extended the lead 2-0 when he took Backes' pass and fired a shot through traffic that beat Howard high into the right side of the net at the 17:22 mark of the first period.

St. Louis coach Andy Murray told the press it was a tight game until Detroit made a play at the end of the game to tie it. The coach continued to say, "We had the right people, in our opinion, on the ice at the end that we wanted to have out there. They made a play and scored a goal. Certainly when you're leading in the last minute, you want the win."

After the Red Wings tied the game in the third, the Blues regained the lead when Boyes tapped in David Perron's centering feed 8:32 into the final period. But Zetterberg tied it at three-all with only 56.7 seconds remaining. The forward's backhander deflected off St. Louis defenseman Barret Jackman's arm and past Mason. In the shootout, Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk and St. Louis' Andy McDonald registered goals in the tiebreaker, both in the first round. Bertuzzi said he watched Datsyuk closely as he beat Mason by roofing a backhand into the net. Bertuzzi emulated Datsyuk in the fourth round of the shootout. He skated wide to the left before waiting Mason out and lifted the winning goal high into the net.

Bertuzzi said, "It was an uglier version of Pavel's goal." The forward admitted he spent a lot of time working on that move. "On previous teams, I've done it quite a bit, so I'm pretty comfortable doing it. It was nice to be put in that spot to do it." Early in the first period, Howard closed his pads on a breakaway attempt by McDonald.

The game could have been a larger lead for St. Louis. Babcock gave Howard a lot of credit for keeping the Red Wings in the game. The coach acknowledged that his team did not play well against the Blues early in the contest. He said St. Louis beat Detroit to all of the pucks, but Babcock also thought his team "really battled and gave ourselves a chance."
