Develop A Guitar Playing Style To Be Proud Of

After you've been playing guitar for a while, you will have developed some basic

guitar skills and you will in all probability be interested in developing your own personal signature style. That is something you aspire to as a guitarist, isn't it? If you want to actually learn to play guitar, you will at some point want to do better than merely copy different guitarists' sounds. You're the one and only "you" out there. You are the only one who can have "your" sound. Isn't it about time you discovered the way to express yourself?

Being Unique, Totally Different, and Influential

It doesn't matter what you play (classical guitar, jazz guitar, finger-style, slide blues, heavy metal, etc.) it's doable for you to - and you should - strive to develop your own style. Actually, listening to other guitarists and even just music in general from a variety of various styles is going to enable you to taste the flavours and rhythms and licks that may grow into the groundwork for your own style. Don't limit your listening habits to only your favourite bands and artists. Listen to vintage albums from among the greats like B.B. King, Chet Atkins, or Andre Segovia. Those guys are giants of their chosen styles (blues, country, and Spanish classical, respectively), and had significant effect throughout different genres, too.

Or take guitarists like Tommy Emmanuel and Eric Clapton. It makes no difference whether they're playing electric guitars or acoustic guitars, you immediately know it is them. And the one method for you to develop this type of sound is by educating yourself on everything that has gone before. Soaking all of it in and letting it get beneath your skin; letting it become part of you.

If you want to be an incredible guitarist with your own personal, distinct guitar playing style that folks instantly recognise, you, too, need to consider doing something different. Being different and fresh and distinctive is the thing we all strive for as musicians (or artists, in general), and if you'd like it, it's possible for you to have it. Listening to the same MP3s again and again is not going to expand your musical horizons and enable you to develop your own individual guitar playing style.

The Synergy of Placing All of the Pieces Together

You'll only begin to develop your own style if you step out of the box and begin playing different things. Of course, don't play stuff that doesn't interest you! But I do suggest that you simply have a go at different things: borrow other guitars and listen to (actually listen to) how they sound, rearrange your pedal rack (or just unplug it!), string your guitar with different gauge strings and take notice of the differences in tone and whether or not you like it, and so on... Just remember who you are and what it is that you would like the music to express.

When you first begin this type of experimentation (particularly if you've been playing for some time already), it will not really feel like "you" and "your style," yet the fact is that if you already had a unique style of your own, you'd know it. And then you would just be on the look out for new sounds and techniques to complement it. If not, you're still copying to a greater or lesser degree. So take it all in and over time it'll all start to bubble and churn round and change into something fresh and new. And yours. There will be a "synthesis" of all that old and unusual and experimental stuff and abruptly your playing will begin to sound like it never has before. You probably won't notice it in any wildly dramatic way, but someone who hasn't heard you play in a long time will. That's when you'll have finally nailed it. The thing that the majority of guitarists hope to at some point obtain, and which most, sadly, fail to do, will be yours: your personal, distinctive guitar playing style.
