Developing Feelings. Say What?

Developing feelings!! Say what?

Developing feelings!! Say what?

Humans are born with the capacity to develop feelings that can be very complex let alone scary! But it all starts with the parents' skill in dealing with their own feelings first. Yeow! You say? An infant's first line of defence is to sense changes in body language and energy levels coming from the frontline worker, you! You say again yeow!! Well, it is rather overwhelming when put in such black and white language.

The good things are that you've bonded physically and emotionally with your infant perhaps even before birth. This connection is vital for both of you in your child developing feelings and skills to deal with those feelings. So all the unconscious emotional stuff is being played out until you are about to hit the toddler stage of about 18 months. Now it gets even more complex.

Your toddler is growing physically and emotionally. These are biological changes that can't be changed unless there is environmental interference. So a baby who is passionate will be a passionate toddler! Hang on to your tempers! The trick is not to get hooked into their exploration of feelings, especially the passionate ones!

The most common emotional boundary that gets challenging is your pre-toddler starting to hit things. Your face, your arm, anything that is available. The reasons can be as simple as a bad bout of teething and this leaves the pre-toddler feeling strong feelings but unable to deal with them. When this happens, take a deep breath and then have your child try to be gentle instead with the slapping, so that it becomes a soothing motion rather than a frisky wave that can actually hurt. By doing this you are doing two very important things. You are distracting your pre-toddler so that s/he can become focused on the next thing, which is teaching her/him how to deal with strong feelings by not becoming overwhelmed with them.

So every time your pre-toddler shows "aggressive" behaviors, which can be through voice and physical movements, your response will be to turn the level of motion into a softer more gentler motion. Your body language is reflecting this transformation and this is powerful learning for your pre-toddler. You are walking the talk! You are actually demonstrating the use of power in a very assertive and positive way! You are now ready for toddlerhood!
