Devices To Humidify A Cigar Humidor

You might think a humidor, in simple terms, is a cigar box

. However, it can refer to any box or room that has high and constant humidity. This type of enclosed area is ideal for stored cigars, cigarettes, pipes and tobacco. Boxes can be made from wood or even glass. Cigar stores may have an entire room devoted to tobacco storage-perhaps even an entire floor of space.

Size matters when it comes to a humidor. An entire room would need a different amount of humidity than a small box or a cooler. The material used to create such a room or a large box would also play a factor in determining humidity. Many people like Spanish cedar, while others use traditional wood. On average, cigar quality is best when cigars are kept at a humidity of 70%. Anything above this and you could be risking tobacco beetle infestation.

In general, humidity inside such an enclosure should be about 70%. Anything over 75% and you risk accommodating an unexpected visitor: tobacco beetles. The less room you fill (as in more empty space) then the less the humidity level reaches. It may be a relief to know that most commercial cases actually have a humidifying system already active. This type of system is necessary right away, so that the cigars contained within the box (or room) can be kept moist. Therefore, the air must be moist long in advance.

Most people use systems like sponges or beads, though a complete electronic system is another option. Sponges work by way of releasing humidity through evaporation and diffusion. This method quires propylene glycol and distilled water to work. Electronic humidifiers allow automated measuring and fixing of the temperature and humidity level. The last option is often the best, especially if you are on a budget. Silica gel beads require only distilled water (and a spray bottle). These beads release humidity at the appropriate time. Once they turn white (meaning low moisture) you simply spray them again.

Bear in mind that before you buy such a case or create a room, the area must be seasoned for use. This process (for wooden enclosures) may be performed by storing a small container of water inside so that the wood is humidified. For enclosures build from other materials, other processes may be required. An unseasoned area, however, will absorb humidity from the room (or box area) and compromise the cigar humidity. Keep these points in mind when looking for a commercial system.
