Devotion - The Sacred Buddhist Emei Mountains

At 3099 meters and stretching 200 km the Emei mountain range is impressive enough

but what sets it apart is its Buddhist history dating back many hundred years, to the time Buddhism arrived in China. Originally more than a hundred temples and monasteries had been here of which only 30 have survived. Located 150 km from Chengdu it is easily accessed by busses that go half way up the mountain or almost to the top and by cable car. According to travelers at least 3 days are needed to see the temples and monasteries on the whole mountain. Although hiking the mountain is a good way to see the antiquities it can be an arduous exercise as some parts of it are extremely steep and distances between monasteries vary. Sedan chairs are available for tired climbers. Accommodation is available in some of the monasteries. They also offer delicious vegetarian food. The mountain is one of the four mountain ranges that Chinese Buddhists consider sacred.

Some the best places to see is the Ming Dynasty Huazan Temple located at 3,077 meters the highest temple on the mountain. Many people come up here to see the multi faced statue of Samanthabhadra at the Golden Summit where the sea of clouds and gorgeous sunrises can be viewed. Baoguo temple at the base of the mountain is the largest temple and was also built during the Ming Dynasty. It is famous for its massive bronze bell that can apparently be heard 10 miles away. The large Wan-nian Monastery with its statue of Puxian Bodhisattva riding a white elephant with 6 tusks is a popular destination. It is also one of the most ancient on the site and dates back to the 3rd century AD. Jin Ding Temple near the top offers beautiful views. Jiu Lao Cave is a Taoist temple still popular with pilgrims. Bailongdong or the white dragon cave has a history going back to the Ming Dynasty. Fuhu Monastery deep in the forest is an ideal place to take a break after a long trek.
