The city proper itself plays host to a number of historically important and architecturally significant temples

. Right in the centre of the city, one finds the popular Shakti Temple. Dedicated to the goddess Durga, this temple, at any point in time, finds in it numerous devotees all immersed in their efforts of prayer and worship. One can also pay ones respects at the Bhupor Mandir, and the Jagannath Mandir, especially during the chariot festival season. A little distance from Dhanbad, one finds the Kalyaneswari temple, another Shakti shrine that is said to hold significance for those suffering from infertility.

The river Damodar runs through this region and causes the presence of many scenic water bodies and a couple of imposing dams. One can indulge in the relaxing activities of boating and fishing in the Maithon Lake, which is situated around fifty kilometers from the city hub, and can also visit the Maithon dam, which is built over the river. This site also hosts a sanctuary for birds and deer. One can also travel to the Panchet dam which is situated at a distance of approximately 55 kilometers from Dhanbad. Presenting an enchanting view, especially during the monsoon, this dam abuts the Panchet hill, which is a lovely picnic spot and lends itself to hiking and other tourist activities.

Ensconced by tree capped hills and lush foliage, the Topchanchi Lake, at a distance of 35 kilometers from Dhanbad, presents an arresting view. Attracting hordes of tourists, this water body is unique in that it is entirely man made, created by excavation. The history buff will be very interested to find the place Gomoh just a few miles away, since this was the place that marked the departure of Subash Chandra Bose from his homeland. Water loving tourists may even visit the icy cascades of the Bhatinda falls or the hot springs found in Chark-Khurd. The city itself has the popular Birsa Munda park which is a picnic hotspot.

Steeped in the mythos of the Mahabharata, the city of Panrra is said of been one of the hideouts of the Pandavas during their thirteen year exile. Sure to attract historians and lovers of mythology, this town also has a temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Tendrils of Buddhism are found throughout Jharkhand and Dhanbad is no exception. The village Gopalpur has a pillar said to date to the emperor Ashokas period and also contains a large stone image of him. Another pillar of Ashokas can also be found in the region of Chati- Gobindpur.
