Diabetic Supplements

Due to today's fast-paced lifestyle and a growing number of people suffering from

metabolic diseases; more and more people turn to herbal or dietary supplements to provide an extra boost of nutrients. Diabetics are among the most likely to pair medication with supplements. According to the National Health Interview Survey, 22% of diabetics use some kind of herbal supplements and about 31% used dietary supplements.

The primary purpose of taking diabetic supplements is to augment or help in blood glucose control and in preventing diabetes complications. Diabetic supplements may contain vitamins, minerals or a mixture of both. Even when taking supplements, blood glucose monitoring should still be done regularly. Blood glucose monitoring also gauges the effect of the supplements on blood glucose levels.

There are different forms of supplements; they can come in tablets, capsules, caplets, softgels, gelcaps and powder. They can be bought from groceries, pharmacies, vitamin and health food stores, online or mail-order catalogs. Supplement types include fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, botanicals or those derived from plants and many others.

Good diabetic supplements in particular are those that help fight complications like nerve damage and hypertension and those that help lower blood glucose levels. Excellent examples include alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), an antioxidant that prevents nerve damage and gamma-lipoic acid (GLA) which is also another antioxidant that prevents nerve damage. Biotin and chromium are also excellent diabetic supplements as they have been found to help lower blood glucose. Another very good diabetic supplement is carnitine, the prominent ingredient in diet pills and drinks. Carnitine lowers cholesterol and helps diabetics lose weight in the process. Diabetic supplements are indeed widely used. The primary importance is to seek clearance from your doctors to be sure that the supplements you intend to take do not interfere or adversely affect your diabetes medication. A common misconception is that supplements are entirely harmless especially those marketed as natural or organic. Yet many supplements do interact with prescription medicines and sometimes they can be potentially life-threatening. Ginseng for example is often found in many diabetic supplements but it can adversely affect warfarin, a drug that prevents blood clotting.

If you have medical conditions such as hypertension, kidney problems or any others associated with diabetes; do not take supplements unless cleared by your doctors especially if you are taking medications for these conditions. More importantly if you experience adverse side-effects or if your blood glucose levels are adversely affected; you must discontinue taking supplements. Remember that both extreme low or high blood glucose levels have dangerous complications.
