Diagnosing Bone Loss Is Necessary For Successful Dental Implant Surgery

In order for a person to be a candidate for dental implants

, he or she must have a healthy jaw bone. After bone loss has begun, the nature and degree of severity of its progression must be determined, monitored, and corrected before any attempts at implantation are made.

Diagnosing the health of the jawbone is one of the most important steps in planning for stable, secure dental implants and the continuance of a beautiful smile.

There are several reasons why bone loss can occur.

The first of these is Periodontal disease. Periodontal disease destroys the beneath the affected gums and teeth. Many people are not aware that gum disease can have this effect on bone matter. The reason for this is that bone is a form of living tissue like everything else in the body.

Although its calcium content is much higher, bone is made of cells, is nourished by the bloodstream, and is tied to the brain's neural network. Infections can happen in bone just like every other part of the body as a result.

Developments of a cyst or abscess can also form a hole in the jawbone. This is very serious; because bone will deteriorate at even more rapid rate once a hole is form. Also, the risk of disease is also further increased.

The extraction or accidental loss of one or more teeth sometimes can cause bone loss. A bone graft is sometimes necessary to restore the integrity of the jaw if this occurs.

The jawbone needs tooth root to stimulate it. Every time a person chews food, the roots of his or her teeth send vibrations into the jaw, which the nerves in the bone sense, and which in turn stimulate the jaw to vitality and regeneration. However, after tooth roots are lost, bone loss always results-100 percent of the time-because these vibrations cease to be transmitted.

There are a number of things dentists do to diagnose and treat bone recession. Medical history is the first thing we examine. We need to know if there is diabetes a history of periodontal disease.

We also need to know if the patient smokes, because smoking can interfere with the healing process that is vital to dental implantation. It is also standard procedure to perform a standard oral cancer exam regardless of whether or not you have ever smoked or used smokeless tobacco.

To check the jaw itself, we take x-rays and oftentimes a CT scan to see just how much bone injury and bone recession a person has experienced. This allows us to actually study the nerves and blood vessels in the jaw and make a precise diagnosis of its health.

Once we have completed a visual exam to look at the shape of the jawbone, we will use a periodontal probe to check the height of the bone around any neighboring teeth. Sometimes, we may also find defects in the jawbone during the course of implant surgery. When necessary, a bone graft may be needed to reverse bone loss (if possible) and improve the person's chances of successful dental implant surgery.
