The extent of polishing is not always same as few stones are preferred to be very sharp while others are required to be less sharp.

Diamond paste is manufactured in different sized grits and colours. It polishes the smooth surface of a metal blade as well as sharpens the cutting surfaces made of aforementioned materials. Special pastes called polycrystalline diamond pastes are used to polish surfaces that cannot be polished using normal diamond. These pastes are different from the normal mono crystalline pastes. The particles in monocrystalline are flatter in shape whereas in polycrystalline paste the particles are spherical.
