Did Google Really Pry On Apples Safari Privacy Settings? Google Dragged To Court!
Recent developments have unraveled some bitter experiences for Google
. Google has been subjected to severe criticism for its allegedly illicit role in bypassing the privacy settings of Apples Safari web browser. It stands true for Google: when problem comes, it does not come alone. Criticism for the above stated cause has drawn the attention of many Congress members which is not a good omen. It is alleged that Google bypassed the Safari privacy settings to track iPhone and iPad usage. The concerns of Google are not going to subside as the matter has already been taken to court.
Recently Bloomberg has reported that a first class action suit has been lodged by a Safari user in Illinois against Google for its role in circumventing Safaris privacy settings. It was alleged in the suit that Google has willfully and knowingly violated federal wire trapping laws and other relevant statutes of the United States. Google had earlier refused to comment on the lawsuit filed on February 17, 2012. But later it made some comments in its company record about its role in the Safari mix-up. Google claims that its act has been misinterpreted in an initial report published by a reputed American journal.
Google submitted that it had created a temporary communication link between Safari browsers and Googles servers to allow users to avail Googles +1 capabilities and let users share content on Google Plus. The intention behind doing this is to ascertain the number of Safari users who have signed into Google and has looked for content sharing across Google Plus.
Google has come with an official statement in response to the aforementioned class action suit. According to Googles official announcement, However, the Safari browser contained functionality that then enabled other Google advertising cookies to be set on the browser. We didn't anticipate that this would happen, and we have now started removing these advertising cookies from Safari browsers. It's important to stress that, just as on other browsers, these advertising cookies do not collect personal information.
The explanation of Google about the entire episode with this statement failed to appease the plaintiff who had initiated the suit. He is adamant to seek class-action status for Apple whose default privacy settings on the Safari web browser software were knowingly and deliberately circumvented by Google.
Google has also failed to convince the Congress with their statement. The problems for Google are not going to end soon as Edward Markey and Joe Barton, co-chairmen of the Bi-Partisan Congressional Privacy Caucus and Cliff Sterns, chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations have taken a serious note of the issue. The Federal Trade Commission has been asked by these Congressmen to investigate and determine whether Google's Safari issue is in contradiction with the recent settlement regarding Google Buzz in which Google is prohibited from, "future privacy misrepresentations."
For Google the entire episode is extremely unsavory but things do not look too promising especially because the class action suit will take its own time to determine the legality of the action committed by Google. Thus it is yet to be examined and ascertained whether Google has actually dented the privacy settings of Apples Safari web browser.
