Did Wearing My Hat Cause My Hair To Fall Out?

Noticing your hair has gotten thinner or is falling out can be a scary moment

. You start to ask yourself what caused it fall out? Could it have been something that I did... like wearing my hat? If you have ever asked yourself this question, then you are not alone. Does wearing a hat really make your hair fall out? Read on...

There are many causes for hair loss, some identifiable and others just a mystery. You may have heard people say that wearing hats can cause you to lose your hair. Is this true? Could it be at least a factor leading to baldness?

Losing your hair can start off with just one or two hairs, yet it can fall out in clumps. No matter, it is still no fun whether you lose it fast or slowly. Hair loss affects men as well as women and even children can lose their hair. No matter what, it is a frightening experience.

As you start to notice it thinning, you may look for options, such as wearing a hat to cover your head to hide the embarrassment. At this point you may start to ask, did wearing a hat cause me to lose it more quickly?

You may have the misconception that only the elderly lose their hair. The truth is hair loss can affect anyone of any age. You may be required to wear a hat or protective head covering for your job...now what? Many jobs require hats or head protection such as sports players, law enforcement, food service personnel, fire protection personnel and maintenance workers.

You may be asking, what can I do if I am required to wear a hat or if I just like wearing a hat to cover my balding head? Let us take a look at the facts.

Placing the hair under undue stress can cause hair loss. Pulling, twisting or otherwise placing stress on your hair can cause it to become brittle and fall out. Wearing a hat or head cover can cause it to become more stressed, especially if you are taking the hat on and off several times per day. The conclusion is wearing a hat day in and day out can stress the hair and make it more likely you will lose it.

If you have a tendency to pull your hat on and off or adjust it frequently can also contribute to hair loss. This tugging and pulling action can place a lot of stress on your hair follicles. This can weaken, damage and destroy the follicle causing the hair to fall out never to regrow again.

Blood flow and circulation can become cut off from the scalp by wearing a hat or head covering too tightly. Constant and plentiful blood flow is essential to the growth of a normal hair follicle. This is how the hair root is nourished and revitalized, helping it to grow strong and full. Impeding this flow can cause the follicle to become damaged, causing the hair loss.

You may notice while wearing a hat in a warmer climate that your hair becomes oilier. This buildup of oil and sebum secreted onto the hair follicles can cause the root to become blocked. Sebum is a waxy substance that is secreted onto the hair by the sebaceous glands in your scalp. A buildup of sebum in the follicle can cause the root to become plugged. This plugging effect can cause the hair follicle to have a lack of oxygen, as well as an accumulation of bacteria or dirt. The plugging action can contribute to hair loss.

On the good side, wearing a head covering or hat can cause a good effect. It can block the exposure of the sun's harmful rays, which can burn the scalp and cause the follicles to become overheated.

If you must wear a hat, there are several precautions to take so the hair loss will not be exaggerated.

* Make sure you wash your hair frequently to stop the buildup of bacteria, oil or sebum.

* Wash your hat, head covering or hatband often to kill bacteria and remove excess oils.

* Make sure you wear your hat, or head covering loosely. Wearing it too snugly could raise the possibility of cutting off blood flow to the hair follicles.
