Did You Know That Aluminium Can Be A Toxic Substance?

As the third most common element of earth, aluminium has a number of applications

that are present in our daily lives, including the creation of soft drink cans and other food packaging. Did you know, however, that the metal can be found in our bodies and in some of the foods that we eat? Whilst aluminium occurs naturally in acidic fruits and vegetables (such as tomatoes, cranberries, rhubarb, apricots, cabbage and apples), it is also found in some other foods (such as processed cheese, tea, spices and herbs) and is added to our water as a purifying agent.

In certain circumstances, however, aluminium can prove to be a toxic substance that causes serious health problems amongst humans.

It was discovered that, when tap water was used for dialysis treatments, many of the patients experienced hallucinations, jerky muscle movement and even dementia.

When combined with fluoride (as often happens in the water supply) it becomes a toxic substance that can cause brain cell death.

Aluminium is known for being a neurotoxin that can enter the brain, nervous system and travel along the spinal cord, especially if you have low levels of magnesium and calcium (as this increases aluminium absorption).

It can increase the destructive natures of other metals that are present in our body (such as chromium and iron) and that we use for day-to-day function, but can be toxic when present in high levels.

It is known to especially affect people suffering from multiple sclerosis, as aluminium has an affect on the myelin that surrounds that nerve sheath.

The metal has been linked with many of the neurodegenerative disorders out there, including Alzheimers, Parkinsons disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Are there other ways that our bodies can absorb aluminium other than through the consumption of food and drinks that naturally contain it? Cooking with aluminium pots and pans is said to increase the amounts of the metal that your body is absorbing, especially when cooking with food and drink that already contains harmless levels of the metal naturally (as they leach the substance out of the pan).

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent yourself from ingesting harmful levels of aluminium. Avoid using deodorants that contain the metal (as it is an unnecessary ingredient), try to use cooking utensils made out of less harmful materials, avoid processed foods that contain glutamate (such as MSG, hydrolysed vegetable proteins, soy protein extract, and so on), and increase your antioxidant levels (as they fight metal toxicities).
