When it comes to dieting and weight loss, you may think you have heard it all

. Each glowing headline leads to a story that is just as disappointing as the rest, all regurgitating the same message: eat right and exercise. You rarely get specifics, and if you do, they are tips that you cannot easily put into practice. It's time for a change, don't you think?

One of the keys to dieting is to reduce the calories you consume each day, but too many people try to make a drastic drop when they decide to increase efforts to lose weight, which only sets them up for failure. The body sends the signal that it may be starving, meaning that you can cave to sweets and treats much easier.

So, if you are going to put yourself on a reduced-calorie diet, cut 100 calories at a time until you reach the desired number. If you're not entirely sure, then consult with your doctor or visit a weight loss medical center to help you out. This may take several weeks to achieve, but don't sweat it (no pun intended)!

Even if you're hitting the gym on a regular basis, you need to be engaging your muscles all the time. Purchase some free weights to store in your living room, den, or wherever you spend the most time relaxing.


When you're watching TV or talking on the telephone, you can do basic exercises like preacher curls, squats, or windmills. You can do these without weights, of course, but as you advance in fitness, adding some weight will add more muscle tone.

Instead of trying to implement foods into your diet that you don't like, make some adjustments to the ones you already know you enjoy. For example, I love chocolate chip pancakes on lazy Saturday mornings, but I have boosted their nutritional value by replacing the chocolate with raspberries, bananas, or strawberries. I also substitute regular syrup with light syrup, which has half the calories and tastes wonderful.

This requires a little creativity, but spending time comparing labels in the grocery store will help you make superior choices to help you cut unneeded calories. Dairy products in particular taste just the same in low fat or light options--sour cream, cottage cheese, whipped cream, milk, and so on.

I have known entire families that lost weight just by switching from whole milk to two percent or even skim milk. You might not like the taste at first, but after a little while, you won't know the difference. That is exactly what happened when I married my spouse, who insisted on buying only skim!

Sometimes losing weight requires a whole team. You should have a friend or family member that is with you on your quest--going to the gym, eating better, and so on. You should also engage the help of medical professionals and a personal trainer so that you have a program tailored to YOU.
