Diet & Weight Loss 3 Essential Items To Get Before Starting Any Weight Management Program
Many people make mistakes when deciding to go onto a brand new diet and weight loss program
. Running out to buy all the gym equipment ever known to man, all those supplements, shakes, quick-loss fad diet how-to books and items which eventually end up collecting dust. Signing up for gym memberships, personal trainers, only to find out at the end of the day, to give up hope and curse upon the wasted expenses.
There are things which you need, and there are things that you should only consider after you have reached a certain stage in your weight management. To solve your dilemma on what to actually get for beginners, here are 3 essential things which you must absolutely get before ANY OTHER THINGS.
1. Digital Weighing Scale with Body Fat % Calculator
Whether or not you want to lose weight or to gain weight, this is a basic necessity that you absolutely need to know where you are standing. This is the basic element which funnily enough, many people still lack to have in their arsenal.
Do yourself a favor, throw away that piece of 10 dollar weighing scale and invest in a good, accurate, long-term weighing scale that breaks down your body fat percentage. The body composition breakdown is essentially extremely critical to know where your body stands in terms of water weight, fat percentages and total body weight for accuracy.
The simple reason lies upon the fact that too many people rely too much on the actual weight shown on scales which do not display certain critical information. Even if you do not need one now, it will pay off by itself in the long run where you by any chance, hit a weight loss plateau and you do not know what is actually happening to your body. Stats never lie if kept accurately in the long run, tools for measurements are a must for any weight management program.
2. Items related to a sport or activity of your choice
Be it starting out by walking, running, swimming or cycling, what you do need is basic activity before you start buying 500 dollar shoes and 1000 dollar gym equipment. For that to happen, before taking the huge stride in going for lifting weights, pick a simple exercise to start with first.
Especially if you have not been active for the past 1-5 years of your life. From there, gradually build up to a point where you build stage by stage, and have the basic endurance and base to do more tedious and intense activities.
If you had always preferred running, get a pair of shoes, preferably one which is not too costly yet, just enough to meet its purpose. Do your research and get one which suits your needs. You do not need a pair of 500 dollar shoes that promotes itself to magically cause you to run at 500m/min. It is all in the person, not the equipment.
If you had always liked to swim, find a place which allows you to swim at a cheap place, which is near and convenient enough for you to allow your butt to get out of the house.
For exercises related to weights and resistance training, understand that your body itself is a natural resistance of its own. Before you try to lift or attempt to scale Olympus with a 300kg bench press, try to do a basic push-up with perfect form. If you cant, start slow and build upon your base and gradually move on to weight training.
A good rule of thumb is this, do not venture to high cost equipment only to find out later that you do not have the capability to actually use them until you have built a solid foundation for fitness. Start out small, build a good endurance, than improve as you get stronger and fitter.
3. Get Educated and be Aware
And I do mean get educated. About nutrition, exercises and your health. Be aware of what you are constantly putting into your body. What you are subjecting your body into. And what works and what doesnt works for your body. The person who knows what your body can and cannot handle best is the person staring in front of the mirror, you.
Subscribe to weekly or daily newsletters about nutrition, read up books on food, articles on exercises and put yourself in a frame of mind of a person striving to be fit and educated. Athletes are nothing without a good foundation of education and knowledge on nutrition. They are constantly aware of what they are feeding their body, what if happening to them at different times of days.
As a personal example, I personally went through 6 months of a weight loss program where I had to take my weight approximately thirty times a day. Before every meal, after meals, before exercise, after exercise, before toilet breaks and after toilet breaks. Before clothes on and off. This may seem extreme. But after those 6 months of constant obsession on knowing tick by tick of what each activity could do to my body, I was able to accurately predict my exact body weight before and after every single activity to the nearest 0.1 kg. This was the cause of constant awareness where it has become an insight to my own body weight.
I am not advising you to do or go to the same extremes as I did, but what I wanted to share with you was that when it comes to things which you desperately want, you MUST be hungry and MUST sincerely and deeply desire it. To a point where it becomes your reality. If you do that, education and awareness of what will affect you will naturally come into play. This will accelerate your knowledge and when you are doing something wrong, you can logically understand WHY and HOW to fix it. Makes sense? Of course it does!
Summary
These 3 simple things, a weighing scale, basic equipment, education and awareness are all you need to start of any basic weight management program effectively. So remember, before running off to purchase items which will collect dust in your storeroom, understand what you need and be patient! That is the key to success!
