Dieting Doesn't Work. Find Alternatives To Traditional Dieting To Control Weight

There are a number of reasons why dieting doesn't work

. In fact, far too many people set themselves up for failure before they even begin the process. Dieting doesn't work because people literally dread going on their diets, and before they start the process are planning their mishaps along the way. Researchers at UCLA found dieting doesn't work.

Their study found that people who diet to lose weight usually gain it back, then some. "You can initially lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight on any number of diets, but then the weight comes back," said Traci Mann, UCLA associate professor of psychology and lead author of the study. "We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more. Sustained weight loss was found only in a small minority of participants, while complete weight regain was found in the majority. Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefits for the majority of people."

People are finding that dieting doesn't work. They lose weight only to regain it a short time later. There are tons of dieting programs out there including: Atkins, South Beach, the Peanut Butter diet, the Drinking Man's Diet, etc. All of these diets work, and none of them work, meaning you can and probably do lose weight on any of them, but you won't keep it off.

Why not? Because the day will come when the diet is over and you're right back to your regular routine; the same routine that got you fat in the first place. In the past diets carried a warning not to stay on them longer than the prescribed period. Today's popular diets are attempting to style themselves as lifestyle choices, but this isn't working either. People want to be able to eat a sandwich or a hamburger once in a while! Weight control is all about choices that you make every day.

Moderation is Key

Dieting doesn't work because diets tend to treat food as the enemy, and tend to restrict access for foods that people love. It appears thata far too popular notion is that one must binge on the foods most loved and enjoyed before beginning the dieting process because these things must be completely eliminated in order to shed those unwanted pounds. Even the 'tasty' foods are not the enemy. Moderation is simply a concept that many loathe to embrace.

The enemy is the personal inability to properly portion the foods eaten. The problem is that the vast majority of people eat the wrong foods far more often than we eat the right foods. The human body need the nutrients we are lacking by not eating the five servings of vegetables and three servings of fruit each day that we should consume. Our bodies know that something is missing and they feel hungry or deprived. If we were actually consuming the proper balance of fruits and veggies each day we would find that we were far less likely to feel hungry and desire those foods that aren't as healthy. This means we would be much more likely to enjoy them in moderation as they should be enjoyed.

Attitude is Important

Dieting doesn't work because diets most often fail to address attitude. To be truly successful when dieting, people need to embrace the process as building a healthier lifestyle rather than depriving themselves of something. Rather that think of a weigh loss program as some short term solution to overcome a negative, consider the process a positive force in your life to make changes for the better. When you have negative thoughts do not direct them at your diet. When you feel deprived remind yourself that you are depriving your heart and other organs of carrying around excess weight. Remind yourself that you are depriving your body of years of bulges and bringing back the body of your youth.

Dieting doesn't work. They might provide a short term solution to a weight problem, but people are more inclined to regain the weight they lose once their diet is over. Weight control is a process based on decisions people make every day. Moderation and attitude are both very important factors toward developing a healthy lifestyle. One might find a lot more value in taking these two factors and turning them into practical day-to-day skills. If so, the long term qualify of life of people with weight control might actually improve.
