Dieting For Seniors

When we think of dieting, we often think of losing weight as the primary objective

. Magazines and television commonly advertise fad diets and meals designed to remove pounds from the body as avenues to a healthier life. However, for many seniors trying to improve or maintain their health, dieting can be just as much about keeping the weight on. The fat we accumulate can be useful fuel used to fight off illnesses and ailments that plague our bodies as we grow in years. Of course, this is not to say that proper dieting for seniors should involve only fatty foods or that there are no seniors who would benefit from weight-loss. Everyone has specific needs and it is always important to consult your doctor before beginning a new diet.

As people age, their gastrointestinal tracts tends to change and this sometimes leads to stomach problems or constipation. This is why properly-planned diets for seniors are less likely to focus on extreme weight change and more apt to focus on creating a regimented meal-plan that promotes comfortable digestion and nutrition.

There are a number of tips that can be helpful for creating a diet that caters to the needs of most seniors who are trying to watch their health:

1. Drink a lot of fluids- Drinking a lot of fluids is one of the most important things to keep in mind when designing a diet for seniors. Consistent intake of fluids can help prevent constipation, which can be harmful to the stomach and generally uncomfortable.

2. Combine exercise with your diet- People who begin diets often believe dieting alone will be enough to keep them healthy but, and this is particularly true for seniors, exercise helps your body use the energy you consume in a healthy way and can be just as important as eating the right things.

3. Eat enough food- Fasting can help some people lose weight quickly, if done responsibly, but limiting food intake can be unhealthy or even dangerous for seniors. In general, the average man over 50 needs between 2000 and 2800 calories a day and the average woman needs between 1600 and 2000. Some people find that their appetite decreases with age but it is still important to get the vitamins, minerals, and energy that their bodies are used to receiving.

There are many other tips and tricks that can complement the diet of health-conscious seniors, such as adding supplements to your daily routine or reducing the amount of salt in your diet to help prevent high blood pressure. When you are ready to commit to improving your health and prolonging your life, it is assuring to know that there are professionals with your best interests in mind. Doctors, nutritionists, and diet counselors are exceptional resources at your disposal when it comes time to choose the diet best suited to your age and lifestyle. Life insurance companies offer another sort of resource for careful seniors.

Unfortunately, no one can prolong life indefinitely, which is why it is also assuring to know that there are preparations you can make to ease the financial troubles of the loved ones you leave behind. Funeral costs can be expensive, but many people are spared this burden because their loved ones had the foresight to purchase protection from life insurance companies.
