Dieting : I am unable to afford To Lose Weight!
Dieting : I am unable to afford To Lose Weight!
We are so enthusiastic to shift pounds that we swallow the guarantees of each diet guru in the world and enthusiastically plunk down our precious cash, praying this time it'll work.
Those primary charges range all of the way from $20 or $30 for a book to one or two hundred dollars for a private programme. Then there's the food. Research has demonstrated that the medium value of a week's food purchases, per individual, is barely above $50. To start the South Beach Diet, tack on another $25 per week. I'm losing pounds by cutting down on eating. It is our feelings that lead us to buy items impulsively, to sign up for programs we all know we'll never complete, and to join projects we'll never actively pursue. Our emotional thinking is our weakness and it has zip to do with intelligence or education or social level. The marketers and ad men know it well and spend their days inventing tricks for which we all too typically fall. How often have you enthusiastically dialed a 800 number during one of those brilliant infomercials only to get something that doesn't work as it did on television, is either shoddily made or merely too tough, and you stick it in the back of a cupboard where it gathers dust till you at last chuck it? When talking of our weight, our feelings reign final. We so earnestly wish to be more flavorful, more respected, and more fascinating. We shall even subject ourselves to painful and infrequently perilous surgery to bring our fact closer to our ideal. And we shall rob our piggy banks, exhaust our banking balances and run up our credit cards for anything that guarantees us a slim future. Do we get what we pay for? Occasionally. There are one or two successful fans in every programme.
It is their photos and stories that are prominently displayed in promotional literature. It's the old before and after trick that sucks us in. Our logic ( and a tiny footnote ) tells us the featured results are not standard. The scared left side of our brain wonders if a little airbrushing could have been employed.
Then the right side explodes, crammed with wish, well-intentioned motivations, and an overwhelming urge to believe. And we get suckered by it again. Notice that we never hear or see about the screw ups, the vast amounts of thousands who start a diet with such high hopes yet live the rest of their lives chunky. They may caution that their program must be followed precisely if it is to work, but let's be pragmatic.
What proportion of us can follow a dependable routine for the weeks, months, or years it'll take to reach our ideal weight? We would be regular creatures but life rarely fits into one unsquishable box for long.
We conform the routine to meet our immediate needs and everything falls apart. More miserable, wiser, guilt-ridden and self-critical, we guarantee to start again until, finally, we give up. The secret is to address our feelings, that obsession with food which has, nationally, reached crisis proportions.
