, you have three options. You can be a temporary worker, an independent contractor or a freelancer. Each type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages that one should know to determine how to benefit from it.

Temporary Staff

Temporary staff is a worker who enters a contract with a company for a fixed period of time and their rate can be hourly or fixed. They may also be entitled to overtime pay. Employers hire temps to meet a certain demand for a short period of time only. This allows the company to reduce costs from committing to more permanent employees. Temporary workers or temps are usually hired through temporary staffing agencies. The nature of their contract varies according to the type of agency. Some temps work for a company but are employed under the agency. The employment agency provides them their salary, training, and benefits if applicable. On the other hand, temporary staff hired from recruitment agencies are directly connected to the company.

Independent contractor


Many have been confused between the employment nature of independent contractors and temporary staff. As a matter of fact, they are similar in some ways. Independent contractors provide service for a set period of time, works on a short-term contract, may also be recruited from recruitment agencies just like temporary staff. However, the independent contractor may work for a company temporarily or permanently. If permanently, they will only be paid for the times they provided service. They have their own set of equipment and materials to be used to finish the job and may choose to come to work or not as long they accomplish the task on the set deadline. Their salary rate is based on the output and not on the number of hours spent to finish it.

Freelancer

A freelancer is someone who can be a temporary staff or independent contractors. The jobs that usually fall under this category are website design, technical writing, software testing, and drafting. The freelancer is required to finish a project for a certain period of time and needs to be visible in the workplace, real or virtual, while working on the project.
