Different Kinds of Wind Mills

Wind mill illustrations are common in the books. A wind mill is responsible for converting the wind energy to a rotating motion through the use of sails. The vanes we could see at pictures are called sails.

There is a vertical-axis wind mill and horizontal-axis wind mill. Historical records show that Afghanistan (referred to as Eastern Prusia before) invented the vertical-axis wind mill. This kind of wind mill is made up of six sails but there are also vertical-axis wind mill having twelve sails. They have different uses. Some used the wind mill to grind grains and there are also those who use it to draw water. This kind of wind mill has been used by Asians. Debates are on going whether the horizontal-axis wind mill of the Europeans originated from the Asians. Some say that Crusades may have been the instrument of bringing the idea of wind mills to Europe. On the other hand, some historians disagree with this view. According to them, no historical evidences were found both documentary and archaeological to showing that the vertical-axis wind mill of Asians influenced the horizontal-axis wind mill of Europeans.

Horizontal-axis wind mill have two kinds. There are fixed wind mills and wind mills that turn to face the wind. Records show that fixed wind mills were used in some islands of ancient Greece. Same with Asian wind mill, the said wind mill at Greece were also used to grind grains. And part of the crushed grain is given to the miller for payment for his service.

Wind mills that turn to face the wind have many versions. There is a wind mill where its body is balanced in such a way that it could rotate (the whole body of the mill) when the wind changes its direction. But there are also wind mills where only the timber cap instead of the whole body rotates. As a result, the body of wind mills was made bigger and higher. There is no need to or a smaller body because you do not have to rotate the whole body anymore but the timber cap only. Timber caps are turned according to the direction of the wind. To do this, one would just have to adjust the lever attached to the cap and put it in the direction he wants.

With the advent of 19th century comes the industrial revolution. Wind as an energy source was replaced with combustion engines and steam. Because of this, wind mill vanished in the minds of people.
