Different Metal Coating Methods

Nowadays, industrial materials like metal require extensive care and protection to make them last long

. Because of several environmental and chemical factors, metals are more prone to corrosion and abrasion, thats why preserving metals has become a challenge to many industries. Fortunately, there are different coating manufacturers have come up with different methods and materials to help people to prevent corrosion.

The popular methods of metal coatings are painting, galvanizing, electroplating, and powder coating. All of these methods offer advantages and disadvantages to people as they can be used on different metal substances from vehicles to guns and many more. Through these methods, preventing corrosion is easy.

Painting is considered as the most cost-efficient method of applying protective coating for metal. Only liquid paint and solvent are needed in this method. Many times, people do the painting on their own; they do not necessarily require professional service. This is why it is less expensive compared to other methods. However, paints have shorter life spans and may require wax coating as another layer of protection.

Galvanization is the process of providing protective coating for metal by adding additional metal or molten zinc layer to prevent corrosion. It is named after a famous Italian scientist who was an expert in the process. Galvanization uses zinc because of its durability. Zinc provides superb protection from corrosion; it is resistant to chipping or peeling. Many manufacturers recommend powder coating application after galvanizing a metal to provide more protection.

Electroplating uses the process of electrodeposition to provide another layer of protective coating for metal and steel. It works by immersing the metal part into a solution wherein attraction of ions from the anodes and cathodes occur. Once attraction of ions occurs, it creates a coating layer on the metal. This process can be done repeatedly to achieve more durable coating.

On the other hand, powder protective coatings are preferred by many people because of their well-known durability. Using two different types of powders, powder coating can also provide smooth and superb finishing for different metal materials. Moreover, it can also provide custom colors like that of liquid paints without risking the quality of the coating.
