Different Scrap Metals Recycling

Recycling metal items can be a great way to conserve energy

, natural resources and reduce waste piles. As most metals can be recycled repeatedly without losing their basic properties, it makes them ideal for recycling. Lets look at some of the recyclable metals:

Aluminium

Aluminium can be recycled pretty fast. Drop one aluminium can into a recycle bin and it will turn up as a new can in a store in 60 days. Plus recycling it requires only 5% of energy needed to produce a new can. Recycling one ton of aluminium cans can save enough energy to power a home for 10 years. Aluminium foil is as recyclable as aluminium cans but is sometimes not accepted in curbs. But there are drop- off centres that accept foils after they are thoroughly cleaned.

Steel

Steel is being recycled for more than 150 years. Steel alloys such as stainless steel can be easily melted down to create new products. Steel cans, food containers, beams, equipments and machines are equally recyclable. The steel framing and casing of old furnishings and appliances are better disassembled and recycled than dumped into the landfill. Recycled steel are used for various applications, from making cars, to framing buildings. Steel recycling takes just a fraction of energy needed to produce new steel from virgin ores. Recycling steel helps keeping the price levels low on many everyday products. Some steel mills use only steel scraps to make new steel. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, new steel contains 25- 100% recycled content.

Copper

Despite the enormous use of copper, only 12% of the worlds raw copper has been mined so far. This owes to copper recycling in vast amounts. Copper retains its value and properties when recycled. Moreover, scrap copper has 95% of the value of new copper, according to the ICA. Though only 12% of raw copper has been mined so far, the fact remains that copper is a natural resource that is limited in quantity. So copper recycling is a great way to preserve this natural resource.

Lead

Lead is found in an essential component in scientific and medical equipments, car batteries and building materials. When these things are disposed in landfills, the lead in them eventually ends up in groundwater supplies where it harms fish and the ecosystem. It can also contaminate drinking water supplies and cause nerve and kidney problems and learning disabilities in children. Recycled lead can be used to make a variety of products like batteries, protective equipments for doctor chambers and hospitals, etc.

Others

Metals like gallium, platinum, nickel and zinc are also recycled, especially by specialty recyclers. Silver and gold have also been recycled for years. Many jewellers and precious- metal recycling companies buy used jewellery, based on the weight and quality of silver or gold present in the ornament.

Now lets look at some items that cannot be recycled:

Containers for aerosols and paints.

Clothe hangers (local dry cleaners may accept them).

Pipes (except copper pipes)

Toxic products.

Ceramic or clay pots and chinaware porcelain.

Fabrics.

Syringes and needles.

Tissue paper and paper towel.

Disposable diapers.
