Different Styles Of Antique Furniture In Los Angeles Furniture Stores

Antique furniture, found in many Los Angeles furniture stores

, comes in many different styles and forms. Antique furniture not only adds sophistication and unique style to your home decor, but can also make for a great conversation piece. In order to narrow your search, it helps to be able to identify different styles from different eras... and there are indeed many. A few such styles will be briefly covered here.

The Gothic style places an emphasis on influences from medieval church architecture. Pointed arches and vertical grandiosity were in vogue in the Gothic style. Furniture from this time period was very solid and durable yet crude, simple and severe in style. Youll often find Gothic furniture held together with mortise and tenon joints, with no glue.

The earliest American colonial furniture used both British and Italian Renaissance influences in its style. Like the Gothic style, oak was the strong, sturdy material generally used in tables, chairs and other furnishings during this era. Early colonial chairs in particular came in many styles, including the rush seat, the plank seat and the splint seat.

During the 18th century, the Louis XV style came into prominence. Unlike the Louis XIV style before it, which is elaborate, expensive and very rare, Louis XV was produced in enormous amounts and fitted people of all classes, from royalty down to the bourgeois.

The Louis XV style also became synonymous with the Rococo style and is renowned for its curved signature stylings and dislike of sharp edges. Louis XV also invited Chinese influences in art and in lacquers. Another unique quality of the Louis XV style is achieving asymmetry without losing balance or aesthetic displeasure.

Chippendale style furniture, originating in the United States during the late 18th century, comes in many different forms depending on the region the piece was built. All Chippendale furniture essentially combined Gothic, French Rococo, and Chinese ornamentation. Such a combination was inspired by the Baroque architectural era that was so prominent during the Queen Anne period.

When drinking tea became very fashionable, the Chippendale style reflected this with new forms of furniture, such as the kettle stand and the China table with a fret top, and the Pembroke table.

In the emergence of the 19th century, the Empire style represented the second phase of Classicism. The Empire style sought to capture and imitate Greek and Roman style furniture, which had just been discovered and recently became in vogue.

Later in the 19th century through the early 20th century, both the Innovative and Art Noveau styles came into being. Here is when furniture makers experimented with newer materials and technology, including laminatation, which is styling by steam. Art Noveau in particular emphasized a more organic, florally abstract and free-flowing nature in their furniture. Art Noveau is known by antique dealers and collectors as the last antique furniture style.

There are many styles to keep in mind when selecting antique furniture. If youre looking for something more elaborate or ornamental, the Louis XV or Victorian era chair may be just down your alley. On the other hand, the Rococo style may be just down your alley if youre into a more rustic style. You can further investigate antique furniture at cheap furniture stores.
