Different Types Of Cv Templates

There are four major types of CV templates in use

, designed based on the candidates profile and the job being sought. Of course, depending on the requirement of the employer suitable modifications can also be made. Let us review the four CV templates:

1.Chronological or Performance CV: This is the commonest and traditional CV format. It essentially outlines your work experience, academic credentials and basic personal details, stated in reverse order, with the latest or current being the first listed. One may also add the strengths and key skill sets of the candidate. A career objective is also usually mentioned in the beginning. A brief work content and accomplishments in each previous job should be mentioned in bullet points. Include hobbies and interests for added flavour. Such types of CV are useful for people applying in the same industry and reflect the career growth over time. However, if there were career gaps, it gets adversely highlighted.

2.Functional CV: A functional CV emphasizes the skills and expertise rather than chronology of work experience. Such functional skills could be multi faceted and cover a spectrum of functions. Such types of CV are useful when there has been frequent job changes or with career gaps. Particularly, when changing industry, or at a senior and a matured level, a functional CV is more apt. Do not use such a template when you have limited work experience or when you would like to depict consistent career progression.

3.Combined CV: As the name suggests, a combined CV is a combination of the chronological and functional format. This type of CV Template is usually longer and thus may not hold the attention of the recruiter for long. However, it allows you to emphasize your strengths and experience and best fit for the job. Obviously those with short work history should not adopt this style.

4.Targeted CV: A targeted CV is normally customized, in that it specifically highlights your relevant skills and experience for the job. Though it requires more effort in framing such a CV, but it becomes well suited for the job. It is different from a functional CV, in that it does not elaborate on any function, but anticipates the potential profile of the job and tailors the CV accordingly.

In fact there has been a new genre, called mini-CVs, which are essentially abridged versions of any of the CVs listed above and is provided or shared on a particular request.

Every person has different backgrounds and varied work history and experience. While some may continue their career in the same function or industry, some others would have picked up many additional skills and abilities during their work life which would enrich the job. Such CVs add more value to a prospective employer. It is, therefore, upto us to decide on the type of CV we would like to compose, well matched to the job at hand.
