hose adapters used for fire hoses and in other heavy duty applications. However, compared to hoses, hose couplings are usually different from one country to the other, particularly with fire hoses. So what are the different types of hose couplings used around the world?
Different Types of Hose Couplings: For Fire Hoses
There are different types of
hose adapters used for fire hoses in different countries. Here are some of the most popularly recognized types of hose couplings for fire hoses:
Nakajima and Machino
The Nakajima and Machino types of hose couplings used for fire hoses in Japan. The difference between the two is that the Nakajima involves a "quarter turn" or "sexless" coupling, while the Machino uses a quick connect and disconnect coupling.
NST and Expansion Ring
NST or National Standard Thread and the Expansion Ring are both types of
hose adapters for fire hoses used in the US. The NST involves male and female couplings which are usually screwed together with a gasket, while the Expansion Ring is commonly used on lay flay fire hose, it has the advantage of providing no flow restriction, as the expansion ring is expanded to match the inner diameter of the hose.
Expansion Rings, like the NST, are installed with special machinery using a drawbar expander. And in the USA, Expansion Rings are commonly supplied with NST (NH) threads.

These types of hose couplings are normally used in both France and in Belgium for fire hoses. It is also known as the DSP connector. These types of hose couplings involves each end has a ring with two protuberances outside; when the ring turns, the protuberances lock to the hook of the other hose.
Like that of NST and Expansion Rings, these types of hose couplings are also fastened by special equipment. However, it can also be fastened by hand.
Other Hose Couplings for Fire Hoses
Stroz: Mostly used in Germany, it involves a "quarter turn coupling", or "sexless coupling".
Barcelona: Like the name implies, these types of hose couplings are normally used in Spain, which is also a type of sexless coupling.
Gost: A "sexless" coupling used on fire hoses in Russia.
