Different Types Of Laboratory Oven To Suit Your Application
There are several kinds of laboratory oven each designed to fulfil a specific purpose
, but whether performing temperature-linked experiments, evaporating, baking, drying, annealing, out-gassing, die-bond curing, distilling or sterilizing laboratory ovens must all have some elements in common.
For example, only cleanroom and vacuum drying ovens can be relied upon not to emit particulates or gases from the oven chamber into the laboratory environment. Given that the same gases can remain in the oven chamber and cause a potentially hazardous or explosive mix over time, lab ovens need to be vented directly to an exhaust system.
Their construction should also ensure that any potentially volatile build-up in the oven cavity cannot come into contact with any heating or spark- emitting elements.
Laboratory ovens need to make the most use of the space available so they are usually designed to have the smallest footprint possible with a large interior.
Precision control and state-of-the-art functionality are necessary in a laboratory setting where temperatures and timing will be crucial for the success of many experiments or procedures.
One of the standard uses of a laboratory oven is to dry laboratory glassware. Hot Air Ovens are ideal for this job as they provide standard heating and drying functions but are also a useful alternative to an autoclave in cases where dry heat sterilization is required. Smaller than an autoclave, they are thermostat-controlled and have an air-circulating fan to provide uniform heat distribution. They are double-walled for insulation and usually run off standard electrical supply.
Gravity Convection Ovens are used when a minimum of air turbulence is desired and where heat uniformity is not essential. They are also used in dry heat sterilization though hot air ovens are more efficient sterilizers because of the overall heat uniformity.
Forced Air Ovens are a good choice for general laboratory uses including drying, baking and curing. Heated air is blown horizontally through the internal cavity from one side to the other. Exhaust ports and dampers allow the control of moisture and venting which allow the user to manipulate the amount of air in the oven. Forced air ovens provide a more regulated and consistent air flow with great uniformity.
A clean room is a specific area within a laboratory, manufacturing or research facility which has no contamination or only a very tightly controlled microlevel of contamination from microbes, dust, environmental pollutants or airborne particulates. The act of opening an ordinary oven door would normally result in introducing air from the oven chamber as well as whatever molecules and pollutants it carried into a cleanroom environment. To prevent this Clean Room Ovens are designed to permit no such contamination. They are available with or without a HEPA filter.
Vacuum ovens are designed to operate under educed pressure or with inert atmospheres and are typical used for de-gassing samples, heating or drying where oxidation is undesirable and moisture assessment as well as the drying of equipment and tools.
As you can see, there are many types of laboratory ovens and they are widely used both in manufacturing, industry and in many clinical laboratories.
