For many people a power supply is simply electricity that comes in from external

wires to power points within the home, yet there is much more to it than that. These days power supplies come from various sources such as batteries and fuels cells, alternators and generators, and even solar power. Such sources not only provide power to run whatever is connected to it, but it must also supply the power it uses to perform that task.

Attributes for any kinds of power supply must be stability under load so that what it is connected to can run properly without suffering an overload or under load of power at any time. The amount of current and voltage that the device can supply to its load is important. If it cannot supply enough, then it will not be able to run the load. The length of time it can support the load is another important factor.

When it comes to such things as laptops or mobile phones all those attributes are important, otherwise they will not work properly or may even be damaged by the lack or by too much - power. When it comes to electrical transmission systems, the power from the wall outlet must be reduced by using a transformer.

Batteries are the prime source of power for both laptops and mobile phones. However, even when these electronic goods are not in use, the power from the battery drains out and so they have to be plugged into a power source to renew it. The trouble is that the power from a wall outlet is too high a voltage and so it has to go through a reducer, which is why you get the special plug and cord to connect them when you buy the product. These reducers are in effect, dc/dc converters.

Medical devices also need the right kind of power supply and for most of them it is critical to have the right kind of high quality supply, since lives may depend on their usage. A medical power supply must be quiet to run so as not to upset critically ill patients, stable in all conditions so that there will be no spikes or brown-outs, and reliable so that it can run the equipment properly at all times.

In addition, it needs to be cost-effective since most hospitals and medical treatment centres have a strict budget that must be adhered to.
