If you are using a heat exchanger then you are probably familiar with secondary refrigerants
. Secondary refrigerants serve the purpose of helping to transfer heat from the heat transfer unit to the primary refrigerant. It helps to keep the unit from overheating or freezing up. Anything that uses a heat exchanger most likely uses a secondary refrigerant. Depending on the type of unit depends on what type of secondary refrigerant you will use.
Some units use air some may use water and something else that can be used are brines. Water is used but unfortunately it has a low freezing point it freezes quickly. No matter what type of refrigerant you choose it is important that it has a high temperature. The reason for that is that when the secondary refrigerant takes the heat from the unit it can heat up so you want to make sure that it will be able to take the high temperatures.
Some other things that you may want to keep in mind when choosing the right fluid for you is, is the secondary refrigerant stable which means it will not fluctuate in temperature, also how corrosive is it? The reason you want to make sure that it non corrosive is because you want your equipment to have a long life span of the fluid is corrosive then the unit will need repairs and maintenance more often. In turn will cause you to have down time and spend more money then you need to. This is another reason why water is not a good secondary refrigerant because it is very corrosive.
Using brines can be more beneficial than using water. There are four classifications of brines and depending on the unit that you are using depends on which class you are going to need. The first class is a salt base, then there is the glycol base brine, then there is a low temperature transfer, and last is the brines that are used for special or unusual applications. The reason that you may need the last choice is because if your unit fluxuates often from temps high and low you are going to require a special brine.
There are some benefits to using this type of fluids. Because you have a secondary refrigerant then the primary refrigerant is used less. Another benefit to using to using a secondary refrigerant is that you have more leeway with the primary refrigerant. Because you have a second refrigerant you can use a hazardous primary agent in units like air conditioners and refrigerators.
