Different Ways Of Making A Vegetable Garden

Different Ways Of Making A Vegetable Garden

When I started my vegetable gardening, I had no proper knowledge of gardening and I used to do it only on holidays, spending very little time for it. I used to think that all vegetable gardens followed a similar pattern. They had to be large plots of land, square or rectangular in shape, necessarily plain with different types of vegetables growing on specifically allotted rows, producing plenty like the farms described in Tobacco Road.

I came to know later that this kind of farming was the result of industrialization of farming. During the 19th century, small farms were merged into large farms to make farming economical and mechanized. The machines on the farms made the people in the villages workless and they moved to cities leaving behind their small farms and old farming methods.

When the farmers from the villages came to the cities to live there, they brought their old farming methods too to the cities. The old traditional methods of farming small plots were in existence since a long time ago in history.

Under the traditional method, small pots of land were cultivated by people to grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, fruit plants and flowers. The gardens had raised beds and were divided into sub-divisions for growing different items of vegetables and fruits.

The first step towards making a beautiful and productive vegetable garden is to plan its design and shape. A very large open plot ploughed by machines, where vegetables and plants are planted in long rows and lines will not be beautiful to look at. Instead, a small enclosed area with raised beds for vegetables will be better for a beautiful kitchen garden.

Now you have decided on the design of your garden that is going to be better than the large sized gardens. You will feel happier and your work will be easier in a small garden. Leave the idea of a rectangular garden; rather choose any fancy shape you can think of for your garden.

Some tips on the design of the garden are circular, semi-circular, wedge shaped, octagonal or pentagonal. You can even include a lawn and a pond in your garden. Even the fruit trees can be planted in such way as to create attractive designs.

Once the question of garden design is settled, the next step is the preparation of beds. Raise the beds as high as possible. Prepare a number of smaller beds rather than a very large one. Raising the height of the beds will help in proper water drainage and health of the plants.

Another advantage of raised beds is their ability to absorb more heat from the sunshine. This makes it possible for the plants to grow well in spring and produce yield early. Raised beds also make it easier to add manure and other nutrients to the soil. If the beds are high enough, you don't have to bend too much to weed and collect the fruits.

If the beds are not very wide, it will be easier for you to reach even the middle of the bed without having to step on the bed. If you step on the bed, the soil will be compressed and hardened and the seedlings may be spoiled. Ideally a bed must not be more than 4-5 feet wide. Let there be footpath between every bed so that you can walk around without harming the beds and the vegetables on them
