Different theories about the causes of ADD
ADD may be in combination of other disorder such as depression or anxiety and this makes it hard to be identified easily. This may lead to late diagnosis and late treatment. Studies have shown that a child who suffers from ADD tends to become depressed as they grow old. Girls suffer more from depression than boys. If ADD is accompanied with mood disorder, it is recommended that the mood disorders be treated first, but parents want that ADD to be the one to be treated before mood disorder since it responds quick to treatment. If there are other problems that are associated with ADD, then they have to be diagnosed at their own and have to be treated separately.
Common conditions that are easily associated with ADD are: Oppositional defiant disorder: this disorder is characterized with antisocial behavior like aggression, stubbornness, tantrums, lying, stealing or deceitfulness. Vigilance disorder, this is characterized with poor concentration and loosing attention easily. Children to stay awake have to become hyperactive so that they can remain active and alert. Mood disorders, boys are likely to suffer mood disorder more than girls are. Anxiety disorder is more apparent in girls than in boys. By now there is not yet a known cause of ADD, however researchers agree that some factors can contribute to its manifestation. Such factors may be found in diet, genetics, physical or social environment.
About genetics, it has been found that most people, who suffer ADD, have a genetic factor that has contributed to this condition. Hyperactive has been associate primary with genetic condition. However, it has been also found out that ADD do not have all the characteristics of a genetic disease, therefore it is believed that there is a combination of environmental and genetic factors for it to manifest. In addition, there is no single gene that has been proven to contribute to the ADD; all genes are believed to play a role that contributes to ADD.
There many theories that have been put across to try to explain the causes of the ADD, some agree that hyperactivity is caused by genes from early human being that manifest themselves in the child. Some research has also shown that some environmental factor like tobacco, lead or alcohol can contribute to ADD in a child, if the mother was exposed to them during pregnancy. It has been proven that some kind of food colors can contribute to the ADD, in response of this some countries have asked the reduction of artificial food colors in the food. Sometime social environment also contributes a great deal in the children suffering from ADD. Some people may agree that the problem with the child with ADD does not lie in his psychopathology but in the inadequacies and dysfunction of the whole family. Some symptoms can be manifested in children who are in foster homes, regardless if they are suffering ADD or not. You may also find some people who argue that everyone is individual, therefore the children who suffer ADD is their way of manifesting their individuality.
