Differentiating The Ruby League From The Union

When one says, rugby, the first thing that comes to mind is a group of men going after the ball and tackling one another

. Although this is generally the picture, many people actually confuse rugby with football and soccer. But the confusion is much more than that since there is also the rugby union and the rugby league to think of.

Rugby is a fast-paced contact sport that has had a rich history that was descended from a common form of football originating from different areas in the United Kingdom. The general term rugby football may refer to two current sports rugby union and rugby league as well as a number of other sports that also share common features with both European version of football. Some of the distinct features common to both rugby league and rugby union include the oval ball, and the rule against passing the ball forward so that the players can only advance possession by running with the ball or kicking it.

As the rules of rugby league slowly deviated from its union counterpart, changes were made in order to encourage a faster-paced, more try-oriented game.

Rugby games are physical, league or union. Rugby union can play a maximum of 15 players on each team while rugby league can play a maximum of only 13 players plus four reserves. While the composition of player position varies, generally rugby union rules allow eight forwards and seven backs, while rugby league rules allow six forwards and seven backs.

In a Rugby union game, players can contest possession after the tackle. Depending on the situation in many rugby games, the player can either play for a ruck or a maul. The fomerusually occurs after the tackle, and it is formed when at least one player from each side bind onto each other with the ball on the ground between them. The latter, on the other hand, occurs when a player carrying the ball is held down by one or more players from the opposing team.

On the other hand, rugby league players are not allowed to contest possession after the tackle. Play is continued with a play-the-ball, wherein play is restarted during various instances in rugby games. To put the ball back in play, the tackled player must have stopped forward progress. He then needs to have both feet on the ground, with the ball also on the ground in front of one foot. He then needs to roll the ball backwards by use of the boot.
