Why would people ever want to learn how to keep bees

? Think about it, getting stung by a bee really hurts, and somehow facing off against hundreds of these stinging insects is going to be a good thing? It turns out that it is a good thing, for many reason, but most of all for the honey you get from the bees. The honey that bees produce not only tastes good but it turns out to be very good for you.

People first learned to find beehives by watching bears. The bears can smell the honey in the hives a lot easier and humans can, so it was simply a matter of following the bear into the food to see where it was getting its food from. The bees will typically find a hollowed out log or other similar dark cool place to build their hives. While this may be an easy place for a bear to collect honey from, for people it isn't the most convenient; so artificial beehives were created.

Today an artificial beehive typically consists of a wooden box with frames in it that contains pre-made sheets that the bees use to build their combs from. This type of beehive design was produced after much trial and error. It produces the correct balance of quality and quantity of honey while giving the bees as much protection as possible.

Where should you keep your bees once you have them? If you have the space you can use your own backyard, but more than likely you will need to work with a local farmer to place your bees near their crops. The farmer won't typically have any problems with this since they know how important pollination is for a good harvest.

What is your threshold for pain? If you can't take a few stings you may need to reconsider your new hobby. When a bee stings you, it's going to hurt. Their venom is released into your body, causing pain; but it's also a signal to other bees that there is a predator nearby and that they need to defend the hive. If you don't know if you're allergic to bee stings try to find out before you purchase your bees. It is not recommended that anyone who has a severe reaction to bee stings should not be involved in beekeeping.

Before you get started make sure that you know what equipment you need. Do not purchase a used beehive, even though it may be cheaper. The used hive could carry a disease or be otherwise dangerous to your bees. One of the worst feelings in the world is coming out to your hive only to find all of your bees have died because a previous hive tenant left something behind.

If you can, try to work with a local beekeeper to get some practice at beekeeping prior to starting your own colony. This allows you to try out your new hobby before completely committing to something that you may not enjoy. It will also allow you to make a few mistakes under the watchful eye of a professional, rather than on your own where it could be much more costly. Contact your local beekeeping groups to see if there are beekeeping lessons being taught anywhere in your area, and as always check online for additional information.
