Digestive Enzymes

Every single process that occurs in our bodies requires energy

. Enzymes make this possible. Enzymes act as catalysts in the body to release this energy and ignite metabolic processes. In fact, enzymes are so incredibly important that they are said to hold the key to the mystery of life! Most digestion and absorption takes place in the small intestine and uses a mix of digestive enzymes from the pancreas and the liver bile. Digestive enzymes are comprised of amylase, protease, and lipase. Food cannot be digested properly if enzyme production is low. Enzyme deficiency occurs for many reasons including : poor diet, fast food, and excessive intake of fats and sugars. These "reasons" require excessive enzymes to break down the food in the body. The body gets tried of producing enzymes so fast. The digestion of food is a large drain on the body.

Our food must be broken down into constituents that can be easily absorbed by our bodies- for example, protein must be broken down into amino acids, starches into sugars, and fats into small components. Imagine that the cause of years of heartburn is insufficient digestive enzymes rather than the GI diagnosis that you received from your physician and you have been taking drugs for years for the wrong reason! When we eat food that no longer contains "food enzymes" our body is forced to expend more of its limited supply of digestive enzymes to break down the food. Food is chewed in the mouth and saliva is mixed with this food. Saliva is made up of an alkaline electrolyte solution that moistens the food, mucus that serves as a lubricant, amylase, an enzyme that initiates the digestion of starch, lipase, an enzyme that begins the digestion of fat, and protease, which digests protein.

For people that suffer from diabetes and have a mild problem with weight gain, they would benefit twofold by taking a digestive enzyme such as sucrose, which removes sugars and starches from the body. Further weight loss help could be found by taking the digestive enzyme lipase, because it has the capability to break down fats found in natural nuts, meat, and creams and milk products. Basically, enzymes are organic protein molecules. And as mentioned earlier, each enzyme is assigned with a specific task. Thus, digestive enzymes are practically responsible for breaking down dietary nutrients in order to be easily absorbed by the body. Large amounts of enzymes are needed to digest the food we eat and if insufficient are made by the body, we bloat and suffer from digestive problems. A deficiency of these digestive enzymes may result in constipation (very common--the ideal should be 2-3x a day.

Supplementing with digestive enzymes can substantially improve your digestive health by ensuring that your food is digested efficiently. This helps to prevent digestion-related discomfort and reduces the potential for other illnesses by improving the assimilation and use of nutrients. Each whole food has it own set of food enzymes that aid in ripening and digestion of the plant. This process continues until the plant completely disintegrates. On the vine it is called rotting, if in the body it is called digestion.
