Digital Cigarettes Prevent Fire Hazards
A lot of controversy has surrounded the idea that digital cigarettes are safer than
traditional smoking, but one area that cannot be argued is fire safety. Unlike smoking, which requires combustion, e-cigs utilize batteries to create vapor, resulting in a safer environment not only for the user, but for his or her family as well.
In fact, a 2000 report by the University of California, Davis, estimated that smoking was responsible for a full 30% of fire-related fatalities in the United States. They also noted that fire-related deaths declined in proportion to the prevalence of smoking.
Digital Cigarettes Reduce Fire Risk in Multiple Ways
The most obvious way that digital cigarettes help lower the risk of fires is the fact that they are non-combustible. They may create vapor that looks and feels like smoke, and even utilize LED lights to create the appearance of fire, but they are, in fact, machines. E-cigs have more in common with your can opener than they do your fireplace when it comes to function.
In addition to this, the way e-cigs are used provides additional fire protection. Every smoker knows that dumping an ashtray before it has fully cooled can result in an impromptu trashcan bonfire. Vaping on the other hand does not utilize ashtrays.
Ashtrays contribute to smoking-related fires in another way too. Smokers may leave a cigarette sitting in an ashtray and then find themselves distracted. Unless the cigarette is placed carefully, it will burn down slowly, changing its weight and balance.
Eventually, the cigarette will tumble out of the ashtray and potentially onto a flammable surface. For proof of this, go into any smokers home. You are likely to find burn marks on at least one piece of furniture.
You can also see the difference in the way traditional cigarettes and e-cigs are handled while in use. Many smokers will hold a traditional cigarette between the lips in order to have both hands free. Lips, though, are not intended to be used as grasping devices. They are far more likely to lose their grip, sending burning tobacco and paper hurtling toward the ground, chair or smokers own skin.
E-Cigs are Inherently Less Dangerous
The United States Fire Administration actively campaigns to prevent fires caused by smoking, and they point out the very sad fact that the victims of cigarette-related fires are often not the smokers themselves, but family members and even neighbors. In fact, according to their statistics, over 30% of fatalities from smoking-related fires are children.
If nicotine were not so addictive, it would be easy for smokers to just drop the habit for fire safety reasons. This is not the case, though. Nicotine rivals heroine in its addictive properties, which explains why so many take such an unnecessary risk - or it did explain it before e-cigs came on the market.
Nowadays nicotine addiction, and even the habit-forming aspects of inhaling smoke, can be addressed with digital cigarettes, which do not produce fire or hot ash. When you consider this along with the fact that e-cig vapor contains significantly fewer chemicals than cigarette smoke and is less expensive in the long-term for most users, there is very little justification for continuing the combustible smoking habit.
