The most advanced and effective method of creating orthotics is through the process of digital orthotic scanning. The patient simply puts his or her foot into the scanner which then creates a 3-D map of the foot. Instantaneously the machine creates an image that highlights the biomechanical structure of the foot and any abnormalities that are present. Instead of then waiting for plaster to dry, the information is immediately transferred to the orthotic lab where the orthotic is produced.

When compared to plaster casts, digital scanning can reach a whole new level of precision. This leads to increased customer satisfaction due to the lower margin of error. Sometimes with the plaster cast method, orthotics would return from the lab and not fit perfectly the way they were designed to. In these cases, there would be a need for an orthotic device adjustment that would only cost more money and delay the alleviation of the patient's pain. Digital scanning virtually eliminates this possibility.
