The line between direct selling and MLM is thinning by the day, with more direct sales opportunities allowing the people in their network to recruit other people to sell and earn commissions that way. However, the difference still exists. The direct sales concept is still different from MLM and is not as profitable too. It is true that with direct sales, you do not have to put in as many efforts as with MLM, but then you are not making as many profits either.
But because of the growing similarities between the two concepts, many direct sales opportunities are promoting themselves as MLM opportunities. This is where you need to be cautious. You have to read their material carefully before you sign up. But, even before that, you need to know what the different between direct selling and MLM is.
Direct selling actually means selling things and earning commissions for them. You can sell over the Internet, such as you do on Amazon or with ClickBank, and you get paid some commission for the items that you manage to sell. It is almost as good as managing a physical store. Even there you are selling products for other people and getting paid commissions for that.
On the other hand, MLM means actually recruiting people into your network and trying to sell some product. Everyone in the network sells. If a particular person manages to sell something, everyone at a higher level than him or her will earn commissions.
Therefore, in MLM, selling is important, but building the network is more important. The higher is the number of people below you in your network, the more will be the commission earnings that you can make. Naturally, these can snowball into huge amounts pretty soon.
It is not that you cannot sell when you are in MLM - you can, and you earn profits from that too. But that doesn't become your main focus in this kind of opportunity. Here, your main focus is to build the network so that more and more people can be selling under you and earning commissions for you. Also, they will be constantly inducting new members, which mean much better profits.
So, while the direct selling concept is outdated and stagnated, MLM is a more dynamic concept. Theoretically, there is no limit to the amount you can earn. Practically, it is very much possible because you are going to build an army of people to work for you. That is why, when you are checking upon an MLM project, read carefully to see if it is direct selling or MLM. Your earnings will depend on that.
