As the nights begin to draw in, I've noticed that i seem to be driving home in the twilight

, and the sun appears to be a lot lower than what i am used to. Gone are the days where I could put the sun visor down and drive happily, as it now misses the sun altogether, still allowing it to shine into my eyes.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) have warned that motorists need to keep their windscreens clear to make sure they are driving in the highest of visibility. Dirty windscreens can add to the dazzling from the low sun, and reduce visibility, causing UK car insurance customers to crash.

The best solution to the problem is to wash your windscreen inside and out, with water or glass cleaner, once a week. The problem is that when the weather starts to get cold, we use our demisters more, and this filters oil and grime into the inside of the car.

Remember, if the sun is behind you, it is shining into the eyes of the oncoming traffic, so be aware that those cars coming towards you may not be able to see properly, and this may impair heir driving.

The institute of advanced motoring also recommend keeping a good pair of sunglasses in the glove compartment in case the glare is particularly bad, and if you do have to look into the sun, focus on the side rather than the centre as to not affect your vision.
