Disc Degeneration
Disc Degeneration
Disc Degeneration
Disc degeneration is a general term often seen on spinal imaging reports, such as those associated with MRI and CT scan technologies. The term "disc" describes the intervertebral spacers found in the spinal column which help to facilitate vertebral movement and shock absorption. The term "degeneration" describes a condition of deterioration, also known as spinal aging, disc desiccation or most commonly, degenerative disc disease.
Obviously, the names of these various diagnostic conclusions can be incredibly frightening and conjure up pictures of spinal structures ready to fall apart at a moments notice. Patients write to me literally everyday informing me how scared they are that they have a degenerated spine. I find this to mostly be a direct result of the callous and often profit-driven mannerisms demonstrated by their horrific doctors. These "professionals" do not even take the time to explain that disc disease is a completely normal, expected and virtually universal finding in the spines of every adult. Degenerative disc disease is typical of the middle and lower cervical and lower lumbar levels.
Why would a doctor go out of their way to frighten a patient? Well, there is usually one explanation which applies to most cases To make money! Spinal "specialists" have found that treating disc degeneration is akin to finding a gold or diamond mine in your own backyard! Everyone has disc degeneration, there is no effective treatment (nor is any treatment needed in most cases) and the poor treatment provided is incredible profitable! Speaking of a medical windfall Why tell the whole truth when you can simply reveal half the story and let fear take over? Besides, it is not like these doctors are lying? There IS degeneration present. The only thing they forgot to mention is that it is not the source of any pain ooopps.
Disc degeneration describes a condition is which the intervertebral disc structure loses its ability to retain moisture. This cases the disc to dry out and shrink, making it more prone to bulging and herniation (also common and rarely symptomatic events). The space between vertebrae decreases, which can be seen on diagnostic imaging as primitive as x-rays. This degenerative disc disease process is also a contributor to spinal osteoarthritis, which is another of the many scapegoat conditions used to incorrectly explain many cases of chronic back pain.
Degenerative disc disease is not harmful unto itself and is certainly NOT a disease. There is no contagious process here and you can not catch it! Many doctors speculate that disc degeneration can be accelerated by trauma and they may be correct in some cases. However, it must be noted that virtually 100% of adults will show degeneration with or without an explanative event in their past. This fact alone could topple the plaintiff friendly civil litigation juggernaut in most developed countries!
I try to disseminate the truth about back pain to as many victims as possible. Isn't bad enough to have to suffer day in and day out, without being lied to and exploited for personal profit by doctors who have absolutely no real idea why the pain exists? Is it acceptable to blame the symptoms on some ridiculous and proven to be incorrect theories which go against all clinical research stats and are further proven to be inaccurate by the abysmal treatment directed at these very same diagnoses? To put it simply and in the NICEST way possible HELL NO! Take that to the bank doc.
