The plateau is also famous for its beauty and biodiversity; it is a protected haven for hikers who wish to experience a montage of diverse landscapes in various moods - without the hindrance of leeches! The 12-odd square miles of the plains lush vegetation are also home to a variety of flora and fauna, most of which are endemic to this plain alone. Herds of the Samba deer, the Sri Lanka leopard which preys on them, the Horton Plains Slender Lori and wild boar are few such mammals, while the quick eye may catch the thin snakes and colorful flitters among the green that secrets away over 87 species of birds, both endemic and migrant.

Horton Plains is a land of dichotomy a tropical forest famous for its chilling temperatures, evergreens, icy waters and blazing hot sun. Shrouded in isolated serenity, its natural beauty and bounty makes it sacrosanct from the defilement of man.
