Discover History At The Royal Barges Museum, Bangkok

The tradition of these fancy Royal Barges and ceremonial processions on water dates as far back as the Ayuthaya era

. Back then, commoners as well as the members of the royal family used boats as the main transportation mode. And the royal family had their barges made in unique and exquisite designs each barge to represent a monarch and designed to accommodate different functions. The tradition of using such technology in processions is a rare occasion in Bangkok but visitors can have a look at these barges at the Royal Barge Museum.

Currently known as the Royal Barge Museum, home to four Royal Barges and four Escort Barges, the Golden Swan, or the Suphannahongsa is the most majestic of all barges on display. This royal barge has been carved out of teak wood using a singletree trunk. The golden head of the swan majestically graces the barges bow giving the vessel a royal elegance.

The next most interesting royal barge is the Anantanakharat; with a seven-headed 'nage', or a snake, leading the way, this vessel too is adorned with rare and intricate carvings. The Anekchatphuchong, again a royal barge, was a creation for King Rama IV. Even though the current vessel on display was launched only in 1914, it portrays the grandeur and elaborate style the original vessel had. The latest addition to the fleet on display is the Narai Song Suban H M King Rama IX. Launched in 1996 this vessel was designed in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of his Majesty King Ayulyadej.

The museum is also home to four Escort Barges, these are designed with glamour in mind, the vessels too boast carvings similar to those of the hulls of these vessels featuring gold and black designs.
