, Kuala Lumpur's picturesque Lake Gardens is a haven of tranquillity and natural splendour. Constructed around a man-made lake this sprawling parkland locally dubbed Taman Tasik Perdana has dominated the landscape of the Malaysian capital since it was first opened to the public in the 1880's. Lined with towering trees, shady spaces, botanical gardens and dainty flower shrubs the Lake Gardens occupies a lush valley that often plays host to musical shows and cultural events. The Butterfly Park is also a Mecca for winged beauties as it is the home of nearly 6000 multihued butterflies belonging to 120 species. As a true to life replica of a butterfly's natural habitat the park is lined with 15,000 plant varieties that create the environment of a Malaysian rainforest. A butterfly nursing and breeding area is also available for viewing in this space that is popular among young children. The slope of the Lake Garden valley hosts the famed Deer Park in Kuala Lumpur where guests can see mousedeer roaming freely in tranquil surroundings complete with a stream.
Other highlights include the stunning Orchid Garden which displays an impressive collection of 800 orchid species that belong exclusively to Malaysia. Thousands of international orchid varieties are also showcased here while guests can also purchase orchid plants on weekends. Hibiscus enthusiasts on the other hand can head down to the Hibiscus Garden which is contained in an area within a captivating terraced garden. History buffs can feast their eyes on one of the globe's biggest freestanding bronze sculptures at the National Monument, built to commemorate the fallen heroes of Malaysia's victory over the community insurgency. The ASEAN Sculpture Gardens is also located alongside the structure. The Tun Razak Memorial is located nearby housing the belongings of Tun Abdul Razak Hussein while the British colonial residences of Carcosa Seri Negara look over the Lake Gardens from the hilltop.
