Discover Majorca an Island in the Sun

With an area of 1,400 sq. miles Majorca (or Mallorca as it is known in Spanish) is the largest of the Balearic Islands. Often referred to as the Island of Tranquility' it has a very varied landscape.

There are tall steep mountains on the North coast and the South is characterized by idyllic valleys with wide plains. The coast is 250 miles long.

In recent years, numerous hotels and holiday homes have been built. Apart from tourism, Majorca is predominately agrarian (almonds, carob, and apricots). Stock breeding is also of importance. Industry is mainly confined to Palma, Manacor and Felantix. The main industries being the production of leather goods, tiles, pottery, jewellery and woolen blankets.

History

There are numerous remains of megalithic buildings (Talayots) that show, that there were settlements on the Island as early as the Neolithic age. Later Phoenicians and Greeks left traces of their civilizations. In the 7C BC the Carthaginians took power.

In 123 BC the Romans captured the islands and settled in several places (including the region of Palma). Majorcan soldiers were actually highly valued in the Roman army for their skill with a sling.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Vandals briefly became the lords of the Balearics. Majorca later became part of the Byzantine Empire. Towards the end of the 8C the Balearics were seized by the Arabs, who made their mark on the islands for the next five centuries. In 1229, the King of Aragon finally annexed the island gave it the status of a Kingdom.

After brief independence, the island was again annexed to Aragon (1345). From the 14C onwards the islands constantly fell prey to pirate raids. Majorca later become part of the kingdom of Spain and remains a Spanish province to this day.

Palma de Majorca

Palma de Majorca is the Capital of Majorca and has a population of around 500,000 inhabitants. It extends over 12 miles along the shore of a wide bay and offers tourists a wealth of hotels, restaurants and of increasingly popularity are holiday rentals in Mallorca.

The most famous tourist attraction in Palma is the cathedral on which work started in 1229. It was finished nearly 400 years later in 1601. The cathedral overlooks the Palma bay area and is a prominent landmark. The cathedral is open to the public all year round from Mon-Fri and Saturday mornings.

Majorca was visited by over 6 million visitors in 2010. The increasing numbers of cheap flights from Northern Europe, year-round sunshine and fantastic beaches make Mallorca one of the most sought tourist destinations in Europe.
