Discover Rottnest Island

Situated only a few kilometers from Perth, Rottnest Island is a wonderful location for spending a romantic vacation

. The white sands and the blue waters are a real trademark for this beautiful island located so close to the Australian mainland.

The scenery is incredibly beautiful, with its large bays and long white sandy beaches. The atmosphere is very low key and relaxed, and the limestone cliffs are a great place to stare at the ocean and unwind.

Summer is the best time of the year to visit Rottnest Island. The place can get quite crowded though, as many Australians and their families also like this location to spend their holidays. The climate is dry and hot, but the breeze can improve the situation more than you think. For a cooler season, you need to travel to Australia from May to October.

On the north side of the island, you will find the Thomson Bay. Here, you can do some real shopping as most stores are concentrated here, as well as fine restaurants and a bakery. A very nice trip to the island can be at the board of a vessel. Vessels dock here all the time which contributes to the great romantic feel of the place.

Water sports are all the rage on Rottnest Island. When you want to experience the island at its best, you can do so by taking a bicycle or walking around. There are many bicycles for hire so you do not need to bring your own. Be aware that vehicles are not allowed on the island, except for courtesy shuttles.

The best place to stay in Rottnest Island is in one of the villas located on the oceanfront. Another site that you will surely enjoy while on the island would be the colony of Quokkas. These are little kangaroo like creatures that are also very cute and loved by children.

They are quite friendly, so don't be surprised if they come close to you and wait for you to pat them on the head. They are also great posers and you will find it very easy to take pictures with them. That will certainly be a souvenir to take home with you!

It is very interesting that Rottnest Island is a place where Quokkas are found in large numbers. They also represent the reason for which the island got its strange name. The first explorers coming here saw these creatures and thought they were a species of overgrown rats. Therefore, the island was named Rats Nest Island, or, as it is known today, Rottnest Island.

You will enjoy many things in Rottnest Island. Besides a visit to see the Quokkas, you can indulge in some sun bathing or swimming. If you are more adventurous, you can try some snorkeling, diving or even surfing. This island is considered to be among the best diving sites located near a large city. There are plenty of things to explore under water, like wrecks of old ships and coral reefs.
